Sloooooow Backups

Question
-
My WHS use to back up my PCs impressively fast. Since adding either... more drives, Avast, and/or Diskeeper 2009, my backups have been really slow. I'm sure if the changes to my system are the cause.
Has anybody experienced backup times getting slower? How did you resolve it?Wednesday, February 18, 2009 3:54 PM

How to check all the drives in your server for errors - Fixed my problem - Thanks Ken
CHDSK actually fixed something? My machines now back up in minutes :)- Marked as answer by Win 6.9 Monday, February 23, 2009 8:53 PM

My backups are still pretty speedy, even with the current size (XL :) ) of the backup database.Try uninstalling Diskeeper and/or Avast!. I would start with Diskeeper; I have Avast! installed and I don't believe it's affecting backup performance.

Thanks for the rapid response. I will try removing DK first. Would removing previous back ups of other PCs on my network cause this?
An example of the exact issue is this: My wifes laptop has been fully backed up and I have not removed any previous backups of that machine. She is a teacher and is constantly adding/changing (small) files. The backup started at about 3am and was at 55% at about 7am. Is this unheard of?Wednesday, February 18, 2009 4:36 PM -
That sounds like an Extremely long time. I agree with Ken, I would try uninstalling Diskkeeper. We had this problem on a Small Business Server, and found the diskkeeper to be the problem.Wednesday, February 18, 2009 4:48 PM

Thanks for the insight to the both of you. I have found a new home on this forum.
I will post my results this evening.Wednesday, February 18, 2009 5:54 PM -
I have uninstalled diskeeper and am currently backing up a machine that has had no changes recently. It has merely been turned on and left on. The last backup was two days ago (my wifes laptop hogged the timeframe las night) and the backup procedure is still running after about twenty minutes, so I'm going to ask, how long does a back up take on a machine that has had little to no use, in your own experience(s)?
Result: 1 hour, 3 min, 35 sec to back up a computer that hasn't had any recent use.
I would also expect to see high disk activity during the process however it seems to peek in 300's.Wednesday, February 18, 2009 8:57 PM -
My HTPC just errored out at 39%. I'm getting discouraged, reinstalling WHS is intimidating seeing that I have 2+ TB of data.Wednesday, February 18, 2009 10:34 PM

It's possible that you have a network problem of some sort. Check your switch(es), cables, make sure that your NIC drivers are set to the proper speed, etc.

One of the initial signs of HDD failure is slow write speeds. Also, disk capacity will affect speed since the system has to squeeze the data into available areas. This isn't an issue on an empty disk, but gets more cumbersome with a nearly full system.
How is your network setup? Is this wireless or wired?

My system consists of four drives.
500gb (System drive)
1tb
1tb
1tb
The 500gb (system drive) is at 4%
the other drives are approaching 80%
I forced the drives to balance because after adding drives they were way off kilter. I'm going to back up the wifes laptop tonight to give it another test. I'll mention now that I have reinstalled WHS to alleviate any doubts that I had regarding third party software. I'll look into my nic if problems persist.
Should the system drive be virtually empty? Any other unsolicited advice is welcome. Thank you all for chiming in, I feel like I'm in good hands based on the above responses so far.Thursday, February 19, 2009 10:58 PM -
I have flow control enabled on both nic devices (onboard), and my WHS wired to two routers, one wireless G and the other is wireless N. My wifes laptop is aimed the N router (which is dedicated to N) and takes the longest. My laptop (wireless G) backs up in 20 to 50 minutes. My wife does move add and change multiple files on her machine e.g. avi, flash, power point, basically files for creating presetations. Yesterday it took over eight hours to back up (over the air). I'm questioning if I should be concerned by that or not, but I am curious what else I can tweak regarding my network devices. I'm not too familiar what settings to tinker with in the nic driver settings.
Dsl router
DIR-655 (with DGS-2205 switch attached)-->Dsl router
WHS-->Dsl router and 2WIRE Dsl roter
All hard wire devices connect to DIR-655 and DGS-2205. The server is also connect to the 2WIRE Dsl router, the only other PC connected to the 2WIRE router is my laptop via WG.
I have 2 HDHomerun devices wired to the switch and have great success with them, I transfer and watch DVD (4.7gb) with success as well leading me to assume (...I know) that everything is OK on a nic level.
Note: Firmware on DIR-655 is up to date.Friday, February 20, 2009 12:54 PM -

WHS uses volume shadow copy (vss) to determine which "clusters" have changed. The shadow copy provider uses 16K clusters, so if it analyzes a volume that has been formatted with 4K cluster size (default for NTFS partititions) it will find lot's of changed clusters AFTER defragmentation.
The only way around this this problem is to format the volume with a cluster size of 16K. This allows the defragger to move the 16K blocks around without changing their content, so WHS doesn't detect changed "clusters" after defragmentation pass.Saturday, February 21, 2009 5:23 AMModerator -
