  • Hi,

Exam 70-640 is being replaced with 83-640, starting with the English language version.
because of this the 70-640 exam is no longer available in English.

This means you should schedule 83-640 if you want to take the equivalent exam in English.
This also means the exam will contain a Virtual lab section.
other than that, the skills measured are the same.

  • Hi Rob,

When did Microsoft replace 70-640 with 83-640? It's just an alternate way to give the same exam. 70-640 is a theoretical exam whereas 83-640 is lab based exam.

Can you provide the article wherein Microsoft has confirmed the same?

    Regards,
    Mike

    Always Microsoft !!!

  • Hello,

The change was confirmed in this Aug 18, 2009 blog post on the Official MS learning blog(The people "in charge" of the exams blog here):

    http://borntolearn.mslearn.net/2009/08/what-happened-to-70-640

    Quote:

"We’ve had a few questions from candidates looking for the English version of the 70-640 exam (TS: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, Configuring) on Prometric’s web site. Now that the Performance-Based version of 640 is available in English, all registrations for 640 in English must use the 83- prefix rather the 70- prefix"

It was announced earlier in this Jun 25, 2009 post on the same blog:

    http://borntolearn.mslearn.net/2009/06/microsofts-virtual-lab-exams-going-inside-the-black-box

    Quote:

"So, when will 83-640 be available in your area (because it is a totally awesome way to test real world skills)? Here’s the way roll out works…once enough testing centers in a region have demonstrated that they meet the system requirements to deliver performance-based exams, the region will be considered readied and only the performance-based version of the exam will be available to customers in that region. This means that the test centers in your region may not be delivering the exam yet. "

The why is partly explained in this May 11, 2009 press release:

    http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2009/May09/05-11TechEd2009.mspx

(look for the "Examining the exam" heading and read from there, there is to much text to quote here)

    Rob.
