Vista Home Premium Upgrade & Product Key RRS feed

  • Question

  • HP 640A running windows xp home SP2. Installing vista home premium upgrade for first time, system hangs with egg timer after entering product key during installation and will not go any further. No HD disc activity, CPU 100% by setup.exe, install application can be stopped from task manager but reports "application waiting for a response"
Same occurs without entering product key after version selection, same in safe mode, all USB hardware disconnected, PC runs normally without a reboot after stopping the setup application. Windows live onecare and firewall switched off. Have left system for over 1 hour before terminating application.
    Upgrade assistant shows no issues
Any help appreciated as the vendor and HP say its a microsoft issue and microsoft will not provide support without a product ID - catch 22!

  • Hi Tony1955,

These forums are for the support of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation issues. Your post does not appear to be Vista Activation or Validation related and is, unfortunately, off-topic for this forum (as well as outside my area of knowledge).

I suggest reposting your question to one of the Vista Newsgroups at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=42486 or go to http://support.microsoft.com for additional support options.

Note: that if you call Vista support, you should be able to eventually get to a live person that you can explain the problem too (even without a Product ID).  I know this because Microsoft normally provides no cost support for install issues and they wouldn't be able to do this if they refused to talk to anyone that doesn't have a Product ID.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,
