  • Hello DanYoon153,

The reason why your Windows is showing as Non-Genuine is because it is not Activated. The reason windows did not activate automatically (and why it will not manually activate) is because the key currently being used is a Keyless Install key.

Vista and Windows 7 do not require a product key to be entered during install.  This is called a Keyless Install.  When Windows is installed using the keyless install method, Windows uses it own Keyless Install product key.  The Keyless Install product key acts as a Trial key and allows the user to use windows for 30 days.  Since the Keyless Install key is basicall a Trial key, it can not be activated.

Since I was't there when you installed Windows, I don't know how your Windows came to be using the Keyless Install key.  The two most likely reasons are either:

    A) You entered your Valid key during install, but may have mistyped something and Windows didn't accept the key but (for whatever reason) you continued the install.  Since the mistyped key wasn't accepted, Windows used it's own Keyless Install key instead.

    Resolution:
If you just mistyped the Product Key during install, then all you need to do is click the Start button, right click on Computer and select Properties. Click 'Change Product Key" and follow the directions to enter the Product Key that came with that copy of Windows.

    or

    B) Your copy of Windows 7 is an Upgrade version.  Upgrade versions must be installed from within the older version of Windows that is being upgraded. If you installed by booting to the install disk then you did a Clean/Full install and an Upgrade Product Key will not be accepted in a Clean/Full install.  In which case, you continued the install but since the Upgrade key was not accepted, the installer used it's Keyless Install key, instead.

    Resolution:
If your copy of Windows 7 is an Upgrade but you installed by booting to the DVD then you will need to Reinstall (and boot into) the older version of Windows (that you want to upgrade to Windows 7) and then put the Windows 7 Upgrade disk into the DVD Player and start the Upgrade install from within the older version of Windows.

    Thank you,

  • Hello Darin,

I am now confused, noticing that on the system information page for this computer, it says windows is activated under windows activation.
(also showing product key ID under it)

I know my brother has installed Windows 7 last month, with license for 4 computers... perhaps I should try again with the key he has used on this one.

    Thank you for your help!

I'll get back here if I need any additional help.

  • Hello,

It turns out I need to buy a copy... and I have a question regarding that, if you could help me.

It offers Windows 7 professional UPGRADE, and I'm wondering if that works even if I already have Ultimate installed...

So will it turn my Ultimate down to professional, or does it install fresh Windows 7?

I'm a bit confused since it also says 'upgrade' which sounds like I should have earlier or lower versions of windows... in order to install.

    Thank you again!

  • The link you provided is for Office, make sure the correct product makes it to your shopping cart. Office Pro upgrade would probably do everything you need it to. You can't upgrade to a lower feature set so you will have to do a clean install, I suspect that you can do that from within the ultimate install you currently have, if not you will need to install a valid OS to upgrade from.

Since you would have to do a clean install from pro upgrade media I will give the simplest route (if it will let you)

From within windows put your pro disk in the drive, wait for it to auto run or navigate to the dvd drive, right click and select install, now follow the prompts, insert your key and select clean install.

If it won't let you "upgrade" to pro by selecting clean install. then you will have to reinstall a qualifying OS first, either way, it means a clean install for you.

This may be confusing but a clean install from within windows and using an upgrade key still counts as an upgrade and your OS will activate, you just can't do a clean install while booting from media with an upgrade key, nor can you upgrade while booting from the DVD.

  • Thank you!

and the link above, also provides windows 7 pro... but you can only see that option when you are eligible for the offer and when you are in shopping cart.
(and that's where my brother originally bought Ultimate, but sadly that offer is ended.)

Thanks for the supports, you guys are doing great jobs!

  • @ Heath M

You really should have made your own thread to ask for assistance. But I'll answer you here.

You are using a Dell System with a known blacklisted Lenovo Ultimate OEM SLP Serial. This serial was leaked just before Windows Seven came out for release to the public.

This serial has been abused by hackers in there applications to illegally activate Windows Seven by methods which are called " Loaders " or another hacks which have used this serial.
