Windows Home server does not backup 2 windows 7 Clients RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have 2 computers on the network that won't backup I get the error message "the computer failed to take a snapshot" these computers are brand new and are running Microsoft Security Essentials as AV and I tried deactivating the windows firewall with no luck. Then backups won't even work when I run it manual or automatic.

    Thank you for your help,

  • Sounds to me like the NIC on the server isn't handling the I/O traffic. You would still have connectivity on the network, but it just wouldn't hold up under the load of a backup. I experienced this.

    1. You could try newer or older NIC drivers to see if that's the culprit.

    2. If the NIC is onboard you could try installing a PCI NIC.

A new NIC solved this problem for me. I recommend the pricier Intel NICs as they are made to stand up to the tasks a WHS is expected to handle.

My system specs (built from extra parts): Pentium D805, 4GB DDR2-800, Abit AB9 Pro, 74GB Raptor (sys drive), 2x 1TB (storage drives), Antec 550 Earthwatt PSU, Antec P182 ATX case.
