Unhealthy server storage pool drive? RRS feed

  • Question

  • WHS reported that one of my 2TB drives was "failing" - I apparently had some file conflicts (but still not sure why?) and when I tried to manually delete the files - error messages noting the files were corrupted came back.  I removed the drive from the storage pool (not all files were moved due to the corrupted / conflicted files - so ran REPAIR and that fixed those issues so it COULD be succesfully removed)  - and ran chkdsk /r on it and this is what it reported (below)...so seems fine?  I rebooted WHS and the file conflicts are gone...so is it possible that WHS would report the drive as "failing" simply because there was some minor file corruption?

Anybody have any suggestions on other drive tests I can or should run to verify the drive truly is ok - before I add it back to the Storage Pool?

    Thanks!

    E:\>chkdsk /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process.  Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first.
ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.
Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) y

Volume dismounted.  All opened handles to this volume are now invalid.
    Volume label is REMOVED.

Yes. If there are issues which chkdsk would correct, and they continue for more than 24 hours (I think) then you will get a drive health warning.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • ok, so the fact that when I ran chkdsk and no bad sectors were found...then I s/b ok to add this drive back.  IE: this was a file issue - not a drive issue?

    Thanks Ken

  • I'll go this far: It doesn't look like a drive issue, since no bad sectors were found. :)
