I just bought a gateway with windows vista off of ebay andI just recieved it.   Well i went to start it and after the log in it sent me to a screen saying activate windows now and saying enter product code at bottom of the computer.  Well the code at the bottom of the sticker says windows xp and the code does not help me at all when i put it in it says that i need the vista ultimate code.  I dont know if i got ripped off or what i bought but i was expecting to get windows vista I dont get why it wouldnt work and why it is saying i need to activate it.  well i ran the diagnostics and here is my report hopefully someone can help me i dont see why I would have to buy vista when it is already on the computer.

  • The seller owes you a "Full Version" license for Windows Vista.  This issue is between you and the seller exclusively.

  • Hello ABKts,

The Product Key currently being used in your Vista is the Default "Keyless Install" key. Vista is allowed to be installed without a Product key, but Vista still needs a Product Key, so it will use it's own Default Key (also known as the Keyless Install key). This key allows the user to use Vista for 30 days before they need to enter a Valid product key.

It would appear that the person that sold you this computer installed Vista without a Valid Product key. So in essence, he sold you a computer with a Trial version of Vista installed.

As Carey has said, this issue is between you and the seller, but if he misrepresented in his Auction that the computer would come with a full version of Vista, you may be able to submit a claim thru ebay.  Please see http://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter/index.html?_trksid=m37 for specific information regarding your rights, thru ebay, as a buyer.

Please also be aware that your computer also has a copy of Office that was installed using a Volume License Product Key that has been blocked by Microsoft. Most likely blocked because it was leaked on the internet.

If the office was included on your computer when you bought it, I suggest submitting a Piracy Report against the seller at http://microsoft.com/piracy.

    Thank you,
