Question on setup strategy RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,
Just a question on SyncToy setup strategy.
I have  laptop (win 7) and desktop (XP) machines and a USB stick that I would like to keep in sync.

It seems easy if I base my world around one of the machines but can I use both machines to drive the process ?
I.e. is permissible / useful / good practice to install the software on each machine and set up folder pairs from both machines so the sync can be launched from either ?
Do they sort out their own syncToy....dat files ?

    Thanks

  • Hi JC,

Of course, you can use both machines to drive sync process.

One thing to notice is that you need to create distinct folder pairs for both of your machines to drive the sync, although these folder pairs are working with the same sync folders. We received reports that some users attempted “reuse” the metadata of an existed folder pair by copying related SyncToy metadata files for their sync folders, but this approach has been proved to cause un-expected results.

It is recommended that you take some test on some temp folders before you apply a complex sync-scenario to the real working folders. We also welcome you to share out your scenarios with more details.

    Thanks
