Remove drive processes failing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello WHS SME's

I have a failing hard drive that will not remove successfully. Each time I try, the process fails near the end and calls out “File conflicts prevented the hard drive removal”. Specifically "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)", calling out the file below. Looks to be a backup set file.

I have run chkdsk /F several times, and each time bad sectors are found and repaired, but the removal process fails calling out the file conflict with the same file.

How can I migrate data and remove this drive if I cannot resolve this issue?

    Host specs below.

Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz | 1 GB RAM | Problem hard drive Maxtor 6Y200PO

Home built WHS Power Pack 3

    Windows Home Server Console: 6.0.2423.0
Windows Home Server Backup & Restore: 6.0.2423.0
Windows Home Server Drive Extender: 6.0.2423.0
Windows Home Server Remote Access: 6.0.2423.0
Windows Home Server Storage Manager: 6.0.3039.0

    Thank you for any insight.

    • Disconnect the drive from the server.
    • Remove the "missing" drive.
See this FAQ for information about what's at risk in this scenario, and this one for how to recover as much missing data as possible from the drive you've disconnected from your server.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
