How to create a bootable USB flash driver for my server RRS feed

  • Question

  • How do I create a Bootable USB flash drive for my Server for disaster recovery?

There is an article titled Learn more about creating a bootable USB flash drive that has a section called "Bootable USB flash drive for your server". It goes on to say

"The USB flash drive that you use must be 8 GB or larger. After you select the USB flash drive that you want to use, the wizard verifies that it is large enough to use for recovering your server."

I found the article by launching the WHS 2011 Dashboard
    Click Computers & Backup
    Additional client computer backup tasks
Tools tab - Hyperlink titled "Tell me more about the repair and recovery tools" which launches the article

There is only one button there on that tab and it says "Create key...". If you click that button, it launches a wizard that creates a client recovery key (it only used 467 MB), not a server recovery key.

So how do I create a Server Recovery Key?

  • "To learn how to start your server in recovery mode, refer to the documentation from the manufacturer of your server hardware.

The bootable USB flash drive for the server will contain the factory image which is used if you select the option to reset the server to the factory default settings."

That's if you bought a Server and a specific recovery image is provided by the supplier. If you have installed the OEM version yourself, just boot from the installation DVD and select "Server Recovery".

  • But the factory image is Windows Vista--I want to recover my WHS 2011 image.

  • No - factory image is WHS 2011 as configured by the Server supplier (if that was not you). Server recovery can be done from a Server backup and booting from the installation DVD.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • I guess I just bought an 8GB USB drive for nothing. Thanks for all the help.
