I am trying to write a PowerShell script to:

Kick off a build for a given build definition and get the build number.
Link the build artifact to a given release in release management.

Hoping someone can help!

You would do better by asking this question in the TFS forum. They will show you how to use the build utilities.

Here are the available TFS modules:

find-module tfs*
\_(ツ)_/
