KB934238 fails to install RRS feed

  • Question

  • KB934238 fails to install, both using the console or RDP to the server and running windows update. Am I missing something important with this update?

Is there a way to "force" it to install?

    Thanks

  • Did you check the contents of that patch on the Microsoft support site? It's very likely that it's not applicable to your server.

You normally shouldn't have any need to force your server to download a particular patch. By default automatic updates are installed, so it will receive critical patches and WHS updates automatically. If you've turned automatic updates off, I suggest you turn them back on, unless you're in the habit of checking for and applying new updates manually on a regular basis (like weekly).

  • That was a most unhelpful comment.  A little research would have told you that this update is failing on lots of machines where it is offered by automatic update - it's not something people are doing manully.  It' happens on XP Pro and on Windows 2003 and maybe on a few other platforms too.

These extracts from a WIndows 2003 Server windows update history should make the point quite clearly:-

Windows Server 2003 Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB934238) Tuesday, January 29, 2008 Automatic Updates
Windows Server 2003 Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB934238) Monday, January 28, 2008 Automatic Updates
Windows Server 2003 Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB934238) Sunday, January 27, 2008 Automatic Updates
Windows Server 2003 Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB934238) Saturday, January 26, 2008 Automatic Updates

Windows Server 2003 Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB934238) Saturday, January 26, 2008 Automatic Updates
Windows Server 2003 Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB934238) Friday, January 25, 2008 Automatic Updates
Windows Server 2003 Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB934238) Thursday, January 24, 2008 Automatic Updates

This is something that needs to be fixed by MS, and fixed quickly - with automatic updates falling over like this people are going to lose faith in it and turn it off, which means yet more zombies on the net.

  • I say again, that patch is not applicable to Windows Home Server, which doesn't have .Net Framework 3.0 installed.

If you have .Net Framework 3.0 installed, you installed it by logging in to your Windows Home Server manually (through remote desktop or physical console) and installing it yourself from Windows Update or manual download. In which case, my advice would be to remove that version of the framework, as WHS doesn't need it installed.
