Validation Problem with Win XP Pro

Question
-
My computer crashed and the Win XP was corrupted. We couldn't find the XP disk so we bought a new one. The computer came up and asked me to Validate and Activate. The Validation failed but the Activation passed. The disk says Service pack 2, but I am running SP3 so I must have downloaded an update.
How do I get rid of the Validation error?

Resolution Status: N/ARight now the computer has a nongenuine installation of Windows XP Pro installed. This is an installation of a retail license that was done with an Invalid Product Key. Invalid product keys are made up with a pirating program called a Key Generator, or KeyGen for short. The product key was never issued by Microsoft, making it invalid.
Please supply the following information:
1. Before you purchased and installed the XP that is now on the computer, did the computer have a Certificate of Authentcity (CoA) for any version and edition of Windows affixed to it? If so, what is the version and edition of Windows listed on the CoA? Do Not post the product key that's on the CoA. Does the CoA have a computer manufacturer's name printed on it, or does it have "OEM Software" printed on it?
2. You wrote, "We couldn't find the XP disk so we bought a new one." Could you please describe what you bought? Again, do not post any product keys.

How did the activation pass and SP3 download if this is an illegal copy?
I can't find a COA on the outside of my CPU. I purchased this HP computer in June 2005 from Best Buy.
The package we received included a 'Start Here' booklet with a COA on the back. The COA includes a silver thread saying 'Genuine'. The disk says Windows XP Professional, Includes Service Pack 2 and Version 2002.
When I boot my computer a screen comes up asking me to pick an operating system. Windows XP Professional is listed twice. Is this part of the problem?
Is the diagnostic report above saying I have Office installed? I haven't reinstalled it yet.
Thanks,
Debbie

Hello DDinwiddie,
The package you are describing would be a systembuilder/small manufacturer OEM licensing kit. That kit would include a hologrammed Microsoft installation CD for Windows with the words to the effect, "For distribution with a new PC only. For product support, contact the manufacturer of the PC" embedded in the hologram in the upper left quadrant. It would also have the Start Here pamphlet, and the CoA peel-off label that is to be affixed to the computer.
Please verify one more thing, that the partial product key in the report above, *****-*****-823T3-32434-Q4666, is identical to that part of the product key printed on the CoA.
If your CD has the "For distribution..." in the hologram and the partial product keys match, then you have inadvertently purchased a counterfeit copy of Windows. The packaging and disc are trying to look like an OEM product, but the disc is actually installing a retail product with an invalid product key.
If that's the case, you should return the product immediately to the seller for a full refund. If you cannot get satisfaction from the seller, please visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on Validate Windows. When validation fails, click on the links to Resolve Now and look for the links for the Complimentary Replacement, which you may qualify for if your materials are deemed to be high-quality counterfeits by Microsoft.

All installations of XP, regardless of being genuine or not, can download and install SP3.Having two operating systems to choose from at start up indicates that a second installation of XP was put onto the computer rather than the latest installation overwriting the previous one. The mgadiag utiluty evaluates the running installation of Windows so the fact that there are two is not causing the nongenuine problem.
The mgadiag report is telling us that, of the versions of Office that it is programmed to look for (Office XP/2002, 2003, 2007), none are currently installed.

Hello DDinwiddie,
Are you still being taken to Bing when performing a Validation?
Thanks,
Darin MSThursday, July 8, 2010 7:19 PM -
NOTE: The Diagostic Report does not report Invalid Product Keys the same as it did in the past.
The result "Validation Status: Invalid Product Key" now only means that there is a Non-Genuine issue but does not tell us what that specific issue is.
DDinwiddie: Please attempt to Validate again at http://microsoft.com/genuine.
If you receive any result other then Genuine, go to http://microsoft.com/genuine/diag and click the Start Diagnostic button. The site will ensure XP is configured correctly to allow Validation. The site will also check for common issues that may effect Genuin results.
Once the Diagnostic site gives you all green checkmarks, click the Validate Windows button again.
If you received a Genuine result, reboot. The Non-genuine messaging should no longer be showing.
Please post back with the results of this troubleshooting,

The first thing you do is repost your report in your OWN, NEW, thread - that way nobody gets confused. Then you wait for Darin to analyse your Key, as I can see nothing wrong with the data. except for the fact that the Key is apparently invalid. From where did you acquire the key and disks?
