MCITP: Which certification is better? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am about to start studying for a certification in Database Administration and my question is: Should I get MCITP: Database Administrator 2008 or MCITP: Database Administrator? The difference would be one extra exam to take for the MCITP: Database Administrator certification. Anyone know what the main difference would be besides SQL Serve 2008 vs. 2005? Thanks.

  • Timezones mate! Some of us are asleep when you posted this!

My question to you is which version of SQL Server are you running? If its 2005 get the 2005 certs or else get the 2008 if you are running 2008.

If you are comfortable on both, what you can do is get the 2005 MCITP and then just do the upgrade to MCITP 2008, which is a total of 4 exams and give you certifications on both platforms which if you are job/project hunting can show that you have expertise to perform migrations for examples.

    Just some thoughts really

  • Ah, forgot about time zones heh. Thanks for your reply though. I'm not running either one, yet. I was looking into starting one or the other. Your upgrade thought was interesting to me though. Are more companies leaning towards 2008 than 2005 or do most companies wait to upgrade?

  • Normal philosphy is that you wait for the first service pack to appear before you upgrade. As most databases tend to form the backbone of mission critical operations its not taken lightly. Usually its a case of a phased implementation to see what happens.

Right now I couldnt tell you the spead but if you look at a Gartner report you could probably find the numbers. If you are not running either, well, hmmm 2005 is a good starting point as the additions in 2008 build on 2005 rather than radically change it (unlike what was done in 2000 to 2005)

If you are DBA the 2005 MCTS contains DB dev stuff so is not as focusssed as the 2008 version is. Also 2008 MCITP is only 2 exams vs 2005's 3 exam MCITP.. Cost/Time will be factors in your decision.

  • If I'm looking to pursue a career as a Database Administrator, which path is the best for entering that career?

  • Depeds on the DBA role in question. So DBAs are pure DBA no coding, just maint and nothing else. Others are a blended varierty, mix of SQL developer and database admins.. and finally there is the Developer DBA, the evolution of a developer who spends so much time stuck in a database as part of their job they acquired a DBA cert/job role as well (I have fallen into that category a couple of times... oooh you can spell SQL .. great here is our database and it needs a backup done!)

Personally I think that all DBAs should have an MCP in the underlying OS such as 2003/2008 and also a grasp of SQL coding so that they can adjust/give out to developers for lousy queries.

Realistically its a case of building experience and then bolstering that with a cert. So think 2005 and upgrade to 2008, it gives you the most options.
