Backup Service Not Running RRS feed

  • Question

  • Any clues?  I've tried all the instructions at  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946339, restarted the WHS multiple times, verified that no disks are failing, and even tried to remove the backup database per the instructions.

If you receive a “Backup Service is not running” error message, follow these steps to reset the backup database:

    1. Log on to the Windows Home Server Console from any home computer.
    2. Click Settings, and then click Delete All to reset the database.
    3. Restart your home server.
    4. Log on to Windows Home Server Console from any home computer.
    5. Click the Computers & Backup tab.
    6. Right-click each of your home computers, and then click Configure Backup to reconfigure the backup.

However, in step 2, above, there is no option to Delete All.  There is an option to attempt to repair the database.  When I select this, after about a minute the Server Console fails (fails on the WHS end, loses it connection on the PC end).

The event log on the WHS shows many failures in the Backup service.  These say that an EOF was hit unexpectedly.  Events also show the Console failing.

    Any clues?

    Thanks.

You should be able to delete the backup database by following the instructions on page 25 of the Windows Home Server Technical Brief for Home Computer Backup and Restore.

  • Thanks.  Following the instructions for deleting the entire backup databate (http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/whssoftware/thread/c0c934c3-2711-4554-88e2-cf072ca887ec/) I did just that.  Then I enabled backup duplication and started new, manual backups.  I'm am writing this a week after starting the manual backups.  They have just completed and, so far, appear fine.  Thanks again for the advice.

  • I think removing the backup databse is a bit drastic, at least since the circumstances under which the "Backup Service is not running" error message comes up is not mentioned.

In my case I get this message on some of the computers on the network, not all.  I get this message only when I attempt to open a backup on those computers a second time.  If I restart those computers I can once again open a backup on those computers once after which I get the message again.

Other computer on the network open the same backup without any problems.

Restarted the WHS does not help at all with this.

So far I can tell that the computers that do not have the problem are running Windows XP Professional (SP-3).  Those with the problem are either Windows XP Home (SP-3) or Vista Home Premium (SP-1).

The February 2009 update finaly made this problem history. I can now open the backups more than once on every computer on my network.
