  • It seems like you have a previous version (CTPx) of Microsoft Sync Framework v1.0 installed on your computer. Microsoft Sync Framework v1.0 RTM does not support upgrade from previous CTP releases.  To confirm that this is your problem, please check that you have any of the following installed on your computer:

    • Microsoft Sync Framework Runtime vX.0 CTPx
    • Microsoft Sync Framework SDK vX.0 CTPx
    • Microsoft Sync Framework Services vX.0 CTPx
    • Microsoft Sync Services for ADO.NET vX.0 CTPx
    • SyncToy X.0

If you do, uninstall all of them, and retry the installation, and your problem will should go away.

Do let us know if this does not solve your problem.

  • Thanks, but none of those shows up in add/remove programs, nor are there folders in program files showing installations.

    So now what?

  • What version of Windows are you running?

    Monday, November 10, 2008 10:33 PM
  • XP Pro SP3

  •

From the SyncToy installation log, we can see that the installation of Microsoft Sync Framework failed.  In order to figure out what caused this we need you to try to install Microsoft Sync Framework separately by following these steps:

    1. Download and Extract "SyncSetup_en.x86.zip"
    2. Go to the folder where you extracted SyncSetup_en.x86.zip
    3. From there go to a folder named "Microsoft Sync Framework"
    4. Double click on "Synchronization.msi" and follow the installation wizard.
    5. If the installation fails:
      1. Send us the failure log
    6. If it succeeds:
      1. Go to folder named "Microsoft Sync Framework Services" under the folder where you extracted SyncSetup_en.x86.zip
      2. Double click on "ProviderServices.msi" and follow the installation wizard.
    7. If the installation fails:
      1. Send us the failure log
    8. If it succeeds:
      1. Retry installing SyncToy from SyncToySetupPackage.exe

  • That failed too. I don't know where the failure log is located (the earlier failure messages told me where to look, but this one didn't).

    I go two error messages:

    1. Error writing to file: Microsoft.Synchronization.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory. I clicked Try Again and I get this error:
    2. The installer has encountered an unexpected error while installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2350.

  •

Error code 2350 tells us that this is not a problem with the Synchronization.msi, nor SyncToy setup, but a problem with the Windows Installer on your machine.

    A couple of questions:

    • Does your user have administrator priviledges?
    • Did you make sure to extract the SyncSetup_en.x86.zip to a local folder, instead of double-clicking on the zip file and running the msi's from there?

If the answer to both these questions is yes. Then this is what you can do to "reset" the windows installer:

    • Open a command prompt windows (Start -> Run -> write "cmd" -> click Ok
    • type: msiexec /unregister
    • press Enter
    • type: msiexec /regserver
    • press Enter
    • retry Synchronization.msi installation

If not, make sure both you have administrator priviledges and that you have extracted the zip file to a local folder before running Synchronization.msi from there.

  • No go. I did that, and I also downloaded the lastest version of the Windows Installer and installed it and tried again, and I still get the same two errors.

  • Did you reboot your machine?

    Tuesday, November 11, 2008 11:22 PM
  • yes.

    Tuesday, November 11, 2008 11:24 PM
  • Can you run the synchronization.msi one more time, but this time lets generate a verbose log.  Like this:

    msiexec.exe /i synchronization.msi /l*vx setup.log

    Wednesday, November 12, 2008 12:31 AM
  • How do I run that? I copied and pasted that into the command prompt, but didn't work. And then where will I find the log when it's done?

    Wednesday, November 12, 2008 12:36 AM
  • you should run it from the directory where you extracted Synchronization.msi.

If msiexec.exe is not on your path you will need to provide the full path.

The log file is specified on the command line, setup.log.  In this case it will be in the same directory where you run the command.  You can specify a diferent location and filename if you like.

  • This is just not worth the trouble. I'll use another program if this one refuses to install.

    Wednesday, November 12, 2008 12:53 AM
  • I got exactly the same error when installing.  I followed these instructions and got the folloiwng in the log:

  • From the log it looks like the installation is failing to write a file.  The file is Microsoft.Synchronization.dll, and the error is a version compatibility error.  I've not seen this problem before, but there are a few things we could do to track it down.  Can you answer the following questions?

     - Is Microsoft Sync Framework already installed on your machine?  If so what version is it?

     - Is Microsoft.Synchronization.dll alreay on you machine?  Check in 'Program Files\Microsoft Sync Framework\v1.0\Runtime\x86\'.  If it's there what is the file version?

     - Did you run Synchronization.msi directly?  If so what error messages were displayed?
