Unit of measure conversion RRS feed

  • Question

  • All,

I have a client which orders a product (inventory item) by weight.  They sell it by the foot.  They have a fixed coversion by item to convert the weight to feet but I am not sure how to do that inside of CRM.  Any ideas?

    Thank you,

  • What is it that you want to do in CRM? When you define the product in CRM you set the unit of measure which for you client should be feet since that this how they sell it. CRM out of the box doesn't track purchases so where is it your client is concerned about conversion from weight to feet?

  • Ok so we have I think the term is plugin?  for purchases so I need it to come in as weight but I guess you are right it should just come in as feet but the PO need to go to the vendor in weight.  Make sense?

  • Hi,

I agree with Feridun, what is it you want to do in CRM? Do you keep track of warehouse stocks and purchases in CRM?

There are a lot of ways to do stuff but I think you need to explain what you want to do before you can get any help in doing it.

  • You could add a new field on the order item to store the value in weight, and through client side script keep the values in sync. Then you can use that field in the reports.

  • Here is what the client wants - we have in CRM a way to track purchases, warehouse etc.  A full inventory system.

A purchase order will go out to a vendor with items.  The unit of measure will need to be weight.  When the product is received into a warehouse it can be received as weight but needs to be converted to feet for sale to the customers.  I have done this in ERP you set up a schedule and the details handle the conversion - so for example I have ACSR#2 with schedule WT-FT.

    ACSR #2

    600 LB SPOOL

    5625 feet

How would this work in CRM can you create schedules?

  • CRM does not offer conversion schedules out of the box.

  • Okay -- so extra field which contains the weight which we put on the PO and then bring in the item as feet and sell it as feet.

  • Hi Dan,

Do you have integration between the ERP system and the CRM? In that case it would be easier to just do the integration. If not, there's also the issue of keeping things updated, but that's another issue.

To just do conversion between weight and length you can make a plugin that takes value from field1 and do some sort of mathematical operation and put the result in field2. You would probably want to do this on create and on change of field1. Then you will need to have logic to handle when the inventory change and decide how you want the inventory to change plus you need to keep stuff in synch with the ERP. It's not an easy problem to solve if I understand correctly what you want to do.
