the product key you typed in is already in use RRS feed

  • i have a genuine product key on the windows sticker found at the back of my laptop. i had to format my computer due to viruses and malware. when i entered the product key i was told it was already in use. it obviously was already in use by me. what do i have to do to validate vista now?

  •  Good Morning Drevass,

    Please follow the steps below as it could resolve your issue. If need be, provide us with additional information to determine the cause of this issue.

    Make sure you are logged on as an Administrator.

    Confirm you are using the most current version of Genuine Advantage by clicking Validate Windows on the website below:


    If the above steps do not resolve your issue, continue below.

    Please run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Test (MGADT) so that I may analyze the results.

    By clicking the link below, you will download the MGADT.  Then click the Run button. Then click the Run button again. Then click the Continue button to perform the diagnostic. The Windows tab should show, click the Copy button to paste your report to the clipboard.  Then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum by adding a post in it and pressing Ctrl V (to paste the text). Clicking the OK button will clear the Diagnostic window. Here is the download link:


    Please tell us about the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for your copy of Windows Vista.

    1. What edition/version of Windows XP is titled?

    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4. Please provide the customer scenario you are experiencing.

    I have the same problem, my notebook came with Vista Home Premium pre-installed, I upgraded to Business, now I’ve gone back to premium and have 23 days left on my grace period.

    I have used the MGADT and have copied the following from the Windows tab:

    I can also tell you that the manufacture on the bottom of the notebook is Cyber Power Inc.

    The product key on the label is also different to the one displayed in the MGADT.


    Also the option to activate by telephone isn’t available to me, when I click ‘Activate now’ in the system properties, the only two options are ‘Activate Windows online now’ and ‘Ask me later’.


    Please, if you could help me out, I only have 23 days and then I don’t know what will happen.

  • well I'll be... the exact same key I've tried like a billion times just worked, I have no idea what I mistyped, but I stand my ground, the under-side of a notebook is i silly place to put a sticker, sorry to disturb anyone from their slumber.
