Office 2003 reports as non-genuine after OS update

Question
-
Hi,
I am experiencing a similar problem, however I am the only user in our small company that has this problem. Does Microsoft want a separate thread or keep these together?
Dean
At request I am starting a new thread:
Here is my information from the old thread, which I assume will be needed here:
Office 2003 was installed some time ago (>couple of years) we recently (last week) added Visio to Office due to a change in the usage of the computer.
In viewing the responses to the original poster, in my case the key in question was purchased as a multi-user license.
Note that Office 2003 itself considers itself registered and validated.
The MGA disgnostic tool gives:

Hello Goes_Guy,
When you get back, use a key finding utility such as http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ to extract the product key from an installation of Office that shows as Genuine after validating here www.microsoft.com/genuine and compare it to the product key you were given when the volume license was purchased.
I think you might find that the rest of the computers have your valid VLK and that the computer showing as nongenuine has the widely pirated VLK installed.
The only Microsoft-supported method for changing an Office product key is a full uninstallation, two restarts, and then a full installation using genuine media and your valid VLK. There are third party utilities that claim to be able to change the product key without the "full Monty" but they are not Microsoft-approved.
Post back to let us know how it works out! :-)

I'm having a lot of trouble with the edit function.
What I needed to add is that after adding Visio, we needed to read some Office 2007 files. And to install the 2007 file reader, we had to update the OS (the computer had been inactive for a year or more) so we did that (WGA was part of the updates) and then added the Office update to allow Office 2003 read Office 2007 files. Then we began to get the message from Office Genuine Advantage that we are not genuine. I have seen elsewhere that the debugger output above is indicating the Office (but not Visio) has a key that is a "Volume License Key" that has been blocked. But I cannot find out why.

Hello Goes_Guy,
WGA/OGA-gated content such as the Office 2007 file reader will be blocked if OGA detects any nongenuine installation of any Office product. In your case the Office 2003 Pro installation was done with a widely pirated Volume Licensing Key and is the reason for the block of the Office 2007 file reader download.
Your installation of Visio is also a Volume Licensing edition. Does your organization have a current and valid Volume Licensing Agreement with Microsoft for Visio?

Both the Office 2003 and Visio licenses are valid (but old) volume licenses. I will try the Office 2007 file reader again when I am back in the office but it was working a couple of days ago. The download was not blocked. And also you might note that I installed Office 2003 on the machine myself with our IT person helping. I am told that the same Office 2003 key is in use throughout in our office (it was a company wide license key, after all) and is working fine.Friday, September 4, 2009 5:27 AM

I tried the key finder on both machines and find that the key is the same on both. However, the failing machine's Office has been updated to SP3 and the other machine's Office has only been updated to SP2. If the difference between SP2 and SP3 includes OGA then that would explain the difference. However, I will have to check with the IT person as to the provelance of the key. He's sure that it was genuine.
DeanFriday, September 4, 2009 6:27 PM -
Hello Goes_Guy,
Are you saying that you have two computers, both with an Volume Licensing installation of Office 2003 Pro, both with the same Product Key as shown by the keyfinder utility, and when both computers visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on Validate Office, that once computer fails Validation and that the other passes Validation?
If so, that's indeed a curious situation!
When you speak with the IT person, ask to be shown proof that your organization has current, valid Volume Licensing Agreements with Microsoft. Passing online validation proves nothing other than you happen to have a valid key--in the same way that if I happened to get a key that fits the front door of your home, the fact that I have a key does not entitle me to the use of your house to watch your TV, sleep in your bed, or eat your porridge [don't worry, I hate porridge :-)]. You should have a piece of paper to hold in your hand, or you should have an account on the Microsoft Volume Licensing website as proof. If the IT person cannot produce one or the other of these, to paraphrase Ricky Ricardo, "He's got some 'splainin' to do."

Hello Goes_Guy,
Take the key that is being used in your Office 2003 Pro installation and do an internet search for the key. You you will find over 10+ pages of sites that display that key.
That key is so widely leaked, on the internet, that it has it's very own WGA error code (Office Status: 114 = that key and no other).
That key does not belong to any company (except Microsoft) because it has been completly retired and blocked. If your company is using that key, they should not. period.
Thank you,

No, what I said was that one computer was complaining that its Office was not genuine and the other one was not complaining. One difference between the two computers is the one is update to SP3 and the other is updated to SP2. I have not gotten around to running the validation tool.Friday, September 4, 2009 8:10 PM

1 in another office purchased from another reputable vendor.
I am suspecting these validation errors suspicious and NOT the result of nongenuine installs.Saturday, September 5, 2009 7:45 PM -
Hello DebCV,
The Office installations purchased preinstalled on a new Dell would be OEM licenses. OEM licenses are completely different from the Volume Licenses shown in your snippet above.
The Product ID for an OEM license for Office 2003 will have "OEM" as the second group of characters.
The Product ID for a Volume license for Office 2003 will have "640" as the second group of characters.
Run the mgadiag utility on each and post them, we'll check 'em out.

Further down in the report we can see the Product ID, this one is from Machine 2: 73931-640-0000106-5723114
Both of these Dells do have Office installations on them, but these installations of Office are NOT the ones that the computers left the Dell factory with. The factory installations would show up as OEM installations and you would see the letters "OEM" in the Product ID rather than the "640" value which is indicative of a Volume License Edition.
The Dell OEM installations have been replaced with Volume Licensing installations of Office with the dubious distinction of having one of the two most-pirated Volume Licensing Keys in Microsoft Office history!
Uninstall the nongenuine installations of Office 2003 Pro, restart, and use the Dell-sourced genuine hologrammed Office CDs and the Product Key on the Dell OEM CoA for Office to put the Genuine original installation of Office back onto the computer.

Hi Dan Thanks hope you can help further,
We have been managing this clients network for about a year.
We do their backups. installations and manage their email and servers.
We have been running updates on all machines for a year without any issues.
To my knowledge nobody but us has installed any software during the past year.
They had been under on roof of a large reputable University.
They are a research academy. We had been informed that a few of the machines
had been purchased under the University volume license prior to this group becoming a
non-profit and separating from the University physically. We bougt a new server license and
I have found a series of Office Professional 2007 Medialess License kits with the documentation
and other install discs and software/ licenses information in files for this group that were
purchased before we began helping them.
Will those be of any use to us getting them all up and running again?
The labels say Microsoft Office Pro 2007 (MLK) OEM softwareMonday, September 7, 2009 8:29 PM -
Hello DebCV,
If you can establish that the computers with the nongenuine installations of Office 2003 at one time came preinstalled with Office 2007 Pro and that the medialess licensing kits belong with these computers, then the thing to do is uninstall the nongenuine Office 2003 and install the genuine Office 2007 Pro licenses.
If you do not have Office 2007 Pro OEM CDs to do the installation, you need to download installation files for Office 2007 Pro, but be sure to use the download that matches the OEM Medialess License Kits. You can download OEM installation bits here: http://www.microsoft.com/office/backup/en-us/default.mspx Trial software available for download from office.microsoft.com is for retail licenses so the MLK keys won't work with the trial bits.
