Windows update requires reinstall of genuine advantage tool; why? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I used windows update (manual use) in February with no issue.  Now (July 10th, 2008,) I am being prompted to (re-)install the validation tool KB892130, which was installed in Aug 2007 (as seen in the software installed list in add/remove programs).  The article (KB892130) is dated December 2007).  There is no evidence of a tool version change that I could find on the microsoft site.

My W2K computer does not get prompted for a reinstall of the validation tool.  It was last used in the same time frame.

Have I been hijacked by a virus?

How do I tell if this is due to a version change in the tool?

  • Periodically, the WGA file is updated and refreshed....that is why it may be offered again from Windows Update.  Since WGA is not applicable to Windows 2000, it may not be offered as an update, unless you have an Office product such as Office XP installed.
