  • Question

  • Hi

We bought our Dell Computer from a local retailer in the High St, Windows XP was pre-installed, and therefore did not come with a CD. We still have the receipt, but the shop has since closed. Dell ,from the certificate on the side of the computer, state that this machine was intended for the Asian market and is not there problem. The certificate number appears to be from another PC, although the certificate appears to be genuine. This is an office computer and I do not wish to remove XP Proffesional as this would cause a problem with our network and backup proceedure, is there a genuine and safe means of overcoming this problem. The computer was purchased in good faith and I wish to resolve this quickly.

  • AMS LTD,

The path of least resistance would be to take advantage of the Genuine Windows Offer (GWO).  Others have told us that the GWO for XP Pro in the UK is £92.

If the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification Tool is installed on this particular computer, you can click on Get Genuine to start the process of qulaifying for the GWO.  See this Knowledgebase article for more detail:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905474/en-us

See this link for the GWO section of the FAQ:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#Question6Label

Or, you can contact a reputable local MS Registered Partner systembuilder who can sell you a genuine license for XP Pro and do the installation, too.

  • To correct your problem, follow these instructions:

Open up this link: www.microsoft.com/genuine and click "validate windows". When you fail validation, it should give you a button that says "Get Genuine". If you click the button it should lead you to where you can order a WGA kit.
