Remote Desktop

Question

OK, scratch the original question from Really Old Timer. I borrowed a windows 7 computer at work and had no problem accessing all of my computers at their remote site (5 of them with 3 different program). So the ssue is, even though the activex client is installed in both the Windows 7 and Windows XP computers, only the Windows 7 will connect to my various desktops. What am I doing wrong or what haven't I done?Friday, July 16, 2010 9:07 PM

Hi,
For remote connections to Dashboard or local clients from a remote XP/SP3 client you need to update the RDP client:
1. Install "Remote Desktop Connection 7.0 client update" (KB969084)
Download "WindowsXP-KB969084-x86-enu.exe"2. Turn on CredSSP (KB951608)
How to turn on CredSSP:
* Registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
Add "tspkg" by right-clicking "Security Packages", and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type tspkg. Leave any data that is specific to other SSPs, and then click OK.* Registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders
Add "credssp.dll" by right-clicking "SecurityProviders", and then click Modify.
In the Value data box,
type credssp.dll. Leave any data that is specific to other SSPs, and then click OK.* Exit Registry Editor.
* Restart the computer.(Please let us know if this solves your problem? Tnx :-)

Vail seems to be functioning well except for remote desktop. I'm now to the point through the internet connection that I can see the selection list of computers to connect to, but when I click on one of the I get a message "An error occurred while sending data to the Remote Desktop Gateway server. The server is temporarily unavailable or a network connection is down. Try again later, or contact your network administrator for assistance.". There is no network connection down and I can't believe the Gateway server has been down for three days. Does anone have an idea of what I should be doing next since my use of a home server relies heavily on remote desktop and I won't proceed until it works. The previous version of Home Server worked just fine but lacked some of the new capability that it's supposed to have, and yes, I am a really old timer.

Forgive my long response time, I'm new to this exercise but I like it. I'm sure this will solve my problem, but I can't try it until Monday when I get back to work. Thank you very much for a very timely response.Saturday, July 17, 2010 2:29 PM

Theo,
My bad! I forgot to mention that all of the computers I've been trying to communicate from have Windows 7. Your suggestion triggered a memory from the first WHS and my long gone XP programs. Any ideas about my current problem? My problem is as follows as what's above your response is not exactly what the situation is:
1) Vail is installed and extended to 15 March. I did install a fresh copy of Vail because of other issues so whatever entered settings existed then, don't exist now.
2) Everything except remote access works perfectly within the network.
3) When using the "home" check, from within my network, I get a 403 error and a note that there's some kind of credential problem. When I use the "remote" check, I get a message saying going further is my choice and a red bar shows uo at the top of the window. I proceed and the Server home page shows up with all of the available computers and files listed, but a note that says there is a page error. When I click on the right side of the red bar, I'm told that there is a credential problem, but my user name and password are the same that I use for access within my network and all is OK.
3) I've reviewed all of the settings on Vail and the other computers and can't find anything wrong. I believe my port forwarding is correct, but I'm now not sure what they should be. I thought I was, but?????????????
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Ed

It's not a Windows 7 solution, but it doesn't matter anyway since the problem is no longer there in the release candidate. So far, no problems at all with the RC including adding shared files and remote access.Tuesday, February 22, 2011 1:23 PM
