Live Mesh Folders size shrinks automatically... RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am having a WIERD problem with some of the live mesh folders on my XP desktop.   When I open the folders they seem fine.   As soon as I try to do anything with the folders, they start vertically shrinking....slowly.   And I can't do anything with them.   when the vertical height gets to the minimal size, they pop back open and start shrinking again....slowly.    This keeps happening.   I have to use ALT-TAB to get to another window on the desktop, then I can ALT-TAB back to the window and use ALT-F4 to close it.     AT that point I can no longer do anything with that window when it's opened.   I can drag and drop files into the folder just fine, but can't open it or do anything with it any longer.

    Any ideas?

I have the same problem. At first I though it was a program called GridMove but the problem continued after I removed it. It must be something related with the sidebar since this only happens in mesh folders. Is there a way to prevent the side bar from appearing? It is not very useful, the colors do not match my setup and it uses too much screen space (specially in a netbook).

    Thanks,

You cannot disable the sidebar on the Explorer window for a Live Mesh folder.
My suspicion is that the problem is being caused by a compatibility problem with another Explorer shell extension.

A bug report would be helpful. And be sure to post a link to the bug back here.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the report! It actually sounds identical to this thread from a while back: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/LiveMesh/thread/a1aada77-554d-48bd-8b65-e0af94a161da/

The problem he describes there seems to be the same as yours - but was caused by a different software package, not Live Mesh. Unfortunately he never told us what that was (I've posted there in the hopes he'll see the email and respond). Do you have any non-standard software packages installed that could be affecting your windows?

    Cheers,

    Oren

I've just installed Mesh and synced My Documents and now Windows Explorer shrinks from the top downwards just like above. If I can't remove the sidebar (which I detest) and it continues to shrink my windows then I'll have no choice but to uninstall it, which would be a great pity as its a good service and I'd happily pay for more storage in the future.

Edit: I can't even now close Explorer and re-open it, it now sticks in the 'roll-up' position until I exit Mesh. I can then expand the window back to its normal size but as soon as I start Mesh it rolls-up again.

  • Hi again. I've done some research on this. I've noticed exactly the same symptoms after installing Maxivista (software to spread your display across a network to two panels). Like Mesh this software also installs a mirror virtual Display Device that appears in Device Manager. If I use either piece of software I get the shrinking Explorer window. Removing them stops the effect. I'm using the latest ATI Catalyst drivers (9.3) with a HD4850 video card. I suspect that an API used by the virtual displays or some clash with the ATI drivers might be causing the problem. To Stephen: I tried to use the 'submit bug' page above but gave up after 15 minutes as it kept messing me around. I suspect it didn't like my using Opera as my browser however I don't like websites that dictate what browser I should use so perhaps you can pass the above information on to the relevant developers. Thanks.

  • Hi,
I have just installed Live Mesh and I too have the same problem.
My Explorer windows keep vertically auto-shrinking until only the titlebar is left.
I am 99,9% sure it is not any other program causing this, because I did not install anything new besided Live Mesh.
Also the sidebar is very annoying. Can it please be removed in the next version.
It does not add any functionality which cannot be added by right clicking.

Please file a bug on Connect for this or search to see if anyone else from above has filed one and vote/validate that bug. Instructions for bug filing are linked in several of the posts above.
I doubt that we will see the sidebar removed, but you can certainly suggest that officially (or vote as I assume this has been suggested already).
