Dell Windows 7 Activation Error RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a dell latitude and originally had windows xp installed.  However, my hard drive died and dell sent me a new one with windows 7 ultimate.  Dell installed windows 7 for me and it worked for the first couple weeks.  Now I'm getting the "This copy of windows is not genuine" message.

I don't have a product key as dell informed me that oem discs don't come with keys.  Does anyone know how I can fix this issue?  Thanks

  • Windows License Type: OEM SLP

Your install is using an OEM SLP key which must be installed by the factory at the time of manufacture. your bios date 10/10/2008 predates the release of windows 7. Your bios does not support a windows 7 OEM SLP key

Contact Dell and have them make it right.

  • Thanks tb19.  I am now activated.  I didn't even need to validate online.  Just needed to download and install the latest bios. Thank you for the link and directions.

Thanks guys.  Dell wanted to charge me $150 for software support over the phone and Microsoft wanted to charge me $199 for a new product key.  You all helped save me quite a bit of money.  I appreciate it.

You need to be aware that technically your installation is non-valid, because the installed operating system does not match (and is not supported by) the COA license on the sticker.
You will have problems if your machine becomes unable to properly read the SLIC table (from the new BIOS), and your only option will be a complete System Recovery using the Dell disks again.
Just to be on the safe side - please run a new MGADiag report so that we can confirm the situation.
