server hardware or system event alert (power-on, power-off, os crash) RRS feed

  • Question

  • i am trying to setup alert by email on specific hardware or system events. server is having Windows Server 2008 R2 OS

I see following events are logged on to Event Log by sources:

Power-On (source: Kernel-General, Event ID: 12, Level: Information)

Improper Power-Off/Shut-down (source: EventLog, Event ID: 6008, Level: Error)
Improper Power-Off/Shut-down (source: Kernel-Power, Event ID: 41, Level: Critical)
Proper Power-Off/Shut-down (source: Kernel-General, Event ID: 13, Level: Information)

OS Crash / Blue-screen (source: BugCheck, Event ID: 1001, Level: Error)

I had been trying to set alert by email on these events, and since its pretty easy to setup by Scheduled Task manager or directly attaching task for certain events on Event Viewer. However none of these works. I guess the reason may be the Task Scheduler service always starts after all those events are logged on to Event-Log, because Event Log service always starts first.

I even tried setting-up alert in Performance Monitor, by creating a User Defined Data Collector Set, use System Up-time as performance counter and set an alert to send email when it reaches below 120 seconds. however this didn't work too. the data collector set is not started when server is rebooted.

I will appreciate if someone can advise on the solution by using Windows Server 2008 R2 built-in functionalities and not using any third-party tools.

Thanks and have a great day!

  • Hello,

The Windows Desktop Perfmon and Diagnostic tools forum is to discuss performance monitor (perfmon), resource monitor (resmon), and task manager, focusing on HOW-TO, Errors/Problems, and usage scenarios.

As the question is off topic here, I am moving it to the Where is the Forum... forum.
