Install issue on two PCs RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey,

    I'm an IT person.

One of my clients has a SOHO with an SBS2003 Server and 8 PCs.

The PCs are all recent Dells, XP Pro 32 SP3, only other software is Dell bundled stuff (Roxio etc.), MS Office XP, Adobe Acrobat, Winzip, TEA.  No other AVs installed, no toolbars or junk installed (I'm fussy about that stuff).  All systems have the latest updates etc.  Other core components include .Net 1.1 and 2 SP1, MSXML 3/4/6 latest SP's, etc.

They purchased three boxed OneCares.  I used three unique available Live IDs, one for each circle of 3 subscriptions.

I was able to install on the initial PC, subscribe, enter the token, then go to the other two PCs in the circle and add them.  Circle #1 of 3 PCs went through without a hitch.  Circle #3 of 2 PCs went through without a hitch.

However, circle #2 of 3 PCs has an issue.  I was able to install from disk on one PC, subscribe, enter token, etc.

But OneCare will not install from the CD on two of the PCs.  I get the error dialog:

    Installation cannot continue.

An unknown error prevented ... blah blah

    Error ID: 0013-80070002

So I tried doing the "add a PC" from the live.com site (ie. download mode), which does install, however, after reboot when I attempt to join the PC to the circle using the correct ID and password it tells me that the ID doesn't have a subscription, and of course fails online if I try to add another subscription since one is already associated with that Live ID.

Assuming that the issue has something to do with the fact that the install won't work from the disk, I followed the posted info I could find on the forums and uninstalled OneCare, ran the OneCare Cleaner, uninstalled .Net 2, uninstalled all MSXMLs, rebooted, re-installed .Net and all MSXMLs, checked Windows Updates, rebooted, ran a sfc /scannow to check for any other possible file issues, made sure no ports/firewall settings were wacky, etc., ...

But...  the OneCare will still give this same failure when attempting to install from the disk.

What other core systems in the OS does OneCare use that I can check?  I'm assuming from other posts it uses .Net 2 and MSXML 4.

Are there any specific ports that OneCare uses that may be blocked preventing the installer from downloading?

Anything else you can tell me to try looking at?

    Best,

    David
