Build multiple Home Servers RRS feed

  • Question

  • I want to build several home servers.  Is it possible to clone the HD after I get one configured the way I want it and still get it to work.  I know the license key doesn't have to be put in right away so I can add that to each new build.  Can I change the server name without causing problems down the road?  I know with SBS that was a no-no.

  • Cloning an installed operating system is unsupported (and a violation of the EULA) for just about any Microsoft OS. (It's also done all the time, but you wind up with duplicate SIDs, which can cause some security concerns on a network.) What you should do, if you're a system builder, is use the windows Home Server OEM Preinstallation Kit, which includes sysprep etc. That will let you clone a disk that's ready to be set up. It's what I expect HP or Fujitsu-Siemens does.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
