There's your problem, then.
You CANNOT run two anti-virus products at the same tome - they WILL conflict and cause system lockups.
You need to uninstall either Avast or MSE (my preference would be to keep MSE)

Download the disk diagnostics for your hard drive and see if there is a problem there. Windows Activation Technology would not cause your system to freeze. Also run several anti-malware tests.

Many thanks. The issue started long before I added the MSE. As a matter of fact , the MSE was added after the validation exercise and microsoft said that as a reward for using a genuine windows, that I should get the MSE.
Twice, I have had to reinstall windows from the recovery disk.
