MS Error always closes Moneyn2007 Sunset RRS feed

  • Question

  •

When I try to open my Microsoft Money Plus Sunset I get a message that "Money has encountered a problem and must shut down".  I have tried to restore from backup files without success.  Does anyone have suggestions/solutions?

Further, I tried to fix the problem by installing the newer sunset version to no avail. It seems to happen when the pgm tries to import any data. The problem arose when I tried to download bank entries from my online bank account. Reinstalling the original program did not help & neither did installing the new sunset version.

    I'm using XP 3

    TIA, Neil

  • This is a known problem.  See the second "sticky" in this forum:

It describes how to replace mnyob99.dll with a repaired file.  If you need more detail on how to do this replacement have a look at:

  • As Bill said, get the patch if you use Money Plus Deluxe Sunset.

There is a potential alternative if you have your actual Money 2007 install disk. It is not a pollished process. It requires an above-average technical orientation and determination. Going the Sunset route with the patch is the easiest.

  • Bill ... Thanks for the reply. I will give it a try tomorrow.

I'm new to forums, so what is a "sticky" and where is the one you want me to read?

  • A "sticky" is a post that has been locked in a way that causes it to always stay at the top of the postings.  My reply provided a link to the particular  "sticky" that you need to read as well as a link to a discussion with more details of the process or replacing mnyob99.dll.

  • Bill ...

I downloaded and installed the sunset version. I understand that I need to locate a newer version of [mnyob99.dll] and replace the existing one. Is this correct? If so, how do I find that specific file to download?

  • Bill ...

Thanks for all your expert help, and forgive the tardiness of my reply.

I was able to install the sunset version that also deleted the existing MONEY program. That caused a minor glitch; to wit: It erased my 6-year history of transactions and installed some examples. I was able to undelete a recent file history and also specify the range of time I wanted for my transactions. This worked re check numbers but all the PAYEES will have to be recreated. I should have disconnected my thumb drive before installation.

    Be well!

  • Neil,

Loosing 6 years of history seems like more than a minor glitch!  But I don't think that installing Money Sunset caused you to loose data.   All of your data is stored in a file MyMoney.mny or another name with the .mny file type.  And you should have .mbf backup files somewhere also.  Installing a new version of Money does not affect those files.

Do a search of your hard drive and and thumb drives for .mny  and .mbf using Windows 7 "Search Programs and Files".  You may have to select "See More Results" to search everything.

Note: When doing this kind of search you should be sure that in Windows Explorer you have unchecked "Hide extensions for known File types" (In Explorer go to Tools>Folder Options>View)

If you locate the file, just double-click on it and you should have your data back.

Going forward, be sure that your .mny file is in your "My Documents" folder, not in the "Programs" folder.  If it's in the 'Programs" folder changes will not be saved.

I suggest that you also look at:

    http://money.mvps.org/faq/article/212.aspx

This is written for Money 2006 but it is still good advice about backups.  And Cal Learner has posted that Money 2007 and MoneyPlus are further improved wrt backups:

Review your backup strategy. Money 2007 and Money Plus both make backups of your four latest Money files by default. I tend to increase that number. It can be raised as high as 99, altho 4 is enough for most. Also have Money make a scheduled backup once per week. Make that be to a USB flash drive. And copy your backups to some secure place off premises in case of fire etc.
