    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I purchased Vista some months ago, subsequent to which ~3 days ago my motherboard failed and had to be replaced. Since the motherboard for 4 years old, I opted to buy a motherboard with a new intel socket architecture, thus necessitating a new processor. Thus my system was rebuilt, much the same with the exception of a new motherboard and new processor.

~4 days into using Vista, I received a tray notification that activation could not be performed. The system properties dialog states I have 27 days left to active. When I try to activate online it informs me: "The product key you typed is already in use" and proceeds to offer me three options:

-->To buy Vista all over again?!?!?

-->To enter a new, different key?!?!

--> Use the automated phone system to activate - I used this, but at the end of the tedious process of entering 54 numbers, I was told precisely the same thing the dialog had informed me - "The product key you typed in is already in use", with no course to rectify it. I have noticed in numerous posts, the support team have asked people to speak to an operator on the phone. Sorry to say, it's an automated system and it presented me with no opportunity to speak with an operator!

-->Contact microsoft - which led me to this and other sets of microsoft forums, all of which repeat the same unhelpful advice of speaking to an operator, when I have no contact number and no idea how to go about doing so on an automated service with limited options.

How may I go about activating this system? The Vista version I purchased was retail and thus not tied to the bios in any shape or form. As far as I understood from the EULA, I am allowed to upgrade my machine, especially since it failed in a manner leaving me no choice as to what to do.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

    Richard I.

  • Hi Richard I.,

You certainly are allowed to upgrade your machine.  Smile   Would you please try phone activating?  You can get started with phone activation by typing "slui.exe 4" in the search field in the Start Menu and pressing Enter.  Please speak with a customer service representative when you're given the option.  The phone activation process takes about 6 minutes.

Do let me know if you're still experiencing trouble after that.

    Thanks!

  • Thank you for the assistance. Through (mis)fortune, I was able to solve the problem.

Since I accidentally misentered one number in the automated telephone activation prompt, I was directed (finally) to a human correspondent, who was able to address the issue and give me an activation code.

  • Following the instructions of the automated phone activation system, I was not prompted with the opportunity to speak to a person, thus could not solve the problem. The machine just repeatedly queried me for numbers which I entered, then it informed me that the product ID was currently in use and that I should purchase another! What number am I supposed to press to get in touch with a person?
