What Roles does WHS 2011 use/allow? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am curious what roles are installed during the base install of WHS 2011 and what roles are allowed?  I would like to enable DHCP, DNS and Active Directory and wonder if those are available under the licensing.  I haven't installed this yet so I thought I would ask prior.  I know SBS 2011 easily accomplishes that but it is overkill for my house as I don't need exchange or share point.  Thank you!

  • The installed roles are active directory certificate services, file services, network policy and access services, and web server (IIS).

The optional, uninstalled roles are active directory federation services, active directory rights management services, application server, DHCP server, DNS server, fax server, print and document services, remote desktop services, windows deployment services, and WSUS.

Whew.  It would be much easier if I knew how to post a screen shot on here, but there you go.

    Hope it helps

Then you want to look at SBSE 2011 instead of SBS 2011 (should still be
available on Connect). Note that SBSE gives you everything you want, but
unlike WHS 2011 doesn't give you the media streaming component.

  • Thank you DW.  So to accomplish what I need, I would have to install AD, DHCP and DNS.  It must be using workgroups for user management rather than AD. I would still like to know if installing additional roles would violate the license.

  • I would assume yes.  "unsupported" is the term I see a lot.  Once you buy it though, it's yours.  do as you please.

There is no AD role available on WHS 2011. Like WHS V1 if you even join
your WHS box to a domain most of the functionality will stop working.

As far as the rest of the available roles, adding them is unsupported but
    won't violate your license.
