PP3 wants to install every time I check for updates

Question

The title of this post really says it all--every time I check for updates in the WHS console, PP3 installs. This has happened at least six times and reboots do not help. The "resources" tab of the console indicates that PP3 is installed; I am just wondering why it still keeps installing over itself again and again.Wednesday, November 25, 2009 10:55 PM

You might try logging into the server desktop and uninstalling PP3, rebooting, then try it again.Thursday, November 26, 2009 1:31 AMModerator -
I would most certainly do that if PP3 was anywhere in add/remove programs. Unfortunately, it is not listed, nor is it in the D:\Shares\software folder. Is there something else I should be looking for? BTW, thanks for responding.Thursday, November 26, 2009 2:42 AM

Just to make sure (which I should have mentioned before, sorry about that), do you have Show updates checked? You won't see it if it's not.Thursday, November 26, 2009 4:48 AMModerator -
PP3 still wants to install every time I check for updates. I'll be out of town tomorrow, but any other suggestions will be welcomed. Thanks again for your concern with this issue. Starting to think that a reinstall of WHS may be in order. This is the original install from February of last year, so it might just be time to get that "minty fresh" feeling that only a reformat/reinstall can provide. Still open to suggestions, though.Thursday, November 26, 2009 7:17 AM

To see PP3 in add or remove programs you need to check "show updates" in add or remove programs. PP3 should be listed as Windows Home Server Power Pack 3 (KB968349).
If it's not listed please try running "C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB968349$\spuninst\spuninst.exe" from a the Run box or a command prompt on your server.Thursday, November 26, 2009 8:28 AMModerator -
Sorry, I guess I didn't make it clear in my last post that I did indeed remove PP3, reboot, and reinstall. PP3 still wants to install itself every time I check for updates, either from the WHS console or if I remote admin to the server.Friday, November 27, 2009 12:34 AM

To clarify: You uninstalled PP3, rebooted the server, went back to install updates, installed PP3, rebooted again, and it still came up as a necessary update? If that's correct, after you install PP3, does it say it was successfully installed and a reboot is required?Friday, November 27, 2009 4:34 AMModerator -
Yes. Uninstalled PP3 and rebooted. Installed PP3 and rebooted. From that point on, every time I check for updates, PP3 downloads and installs. It does not prompt for a reboot, but I have rebooted anyway to see if it makes a difference. It doesnt'. If I don't reboot and go back to check for updates, it will install again (and again and again). Puzzling, huh?Friday, November 27, 2009 5:56 PM

Yes, that is strange. At this point, I think the only viable option left is Server Reinstallation.- Proposed as answer by kariya21Moderator Saturday, November 28, 2009 8:24 PM
