Upgrade shut down windows office, home and student 2010

  I have an app on my windows 8 that says I can upgrade anytime. I already have 2010. I thought it was indicating that I could upgrade my Office, Home and Student 2010. I entered the product key inside the box the software came in. It accepted the product key so I clicked on install now but when I tried to open windows it tells me Microsoft doesn't recognize the product key. I bought the software 2 years ago.

  How can I restore windows. My history is turned off so the computer can't go back to a previous date to restore.
