MS Will not verify my site using <Meta> tag, even though its there in the correct place. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've followed the instructions in adding a <Meta> tag to my site (index.htm) with the appropriate validation code:
    The site is:
    http://www.freewebs.com/nicaragua-property-dispute/

    The verification code (and I can see it when I pull the View Source from the page) is:

    <meta name="msvalidate.01" content="5EA2D0C642234F1A8B80D74036C8AF13" />
    However, Site Verification reports the following error:

    "We were not able to verify your site. Make sure you've uploaded the LiveSearchSiteAuth.xml file or inserted the verification meta tag"

    Web address: www.freewebs.com/nicaragua-property-dispute
    Authentication code: 5EA2D0C642234F1A8B80D74036C8AF13

    What am I doing wrong?  Check the web site, the code is there and in the correct place inside the <Head> tags.
    HELP!

    Hi Justin,

    The tag code is correct, so that is not the issue. We are taking a look at this and get back to you.

  • Great. If you aren't indexed already, you might want to submit your domain to: http://search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx. I also got word that the double hyphen is not an issue.

  • Are you sure that the verification method chosen was "Look for a META tag I'll add to the home page file." and not "Look for an XML file I'll add to the site."?  I ask because the default is the former, and you're trying to use the latter.  I think the only way to change the verification method is to delete the site from the Site List and add it again, paying careful attention to the Verification method.

    Cordially,

  • Delete youre webpage, and do it all over again, but use xml this time, and make sure you give it the complete url.

    It can also be that you have entered the url incorrect.

    or.. you have to close the following meta tag with an "/"

    <META name="y_key" content="7047740b4abcaba3" >

  • Hi, Justin.

    I think the problem reveals a bug in Live.  I believe that the fact that it has two hypens in the name gives the Live Search bot problems, and it cannot verify.

    This issue came up on another thread of discussion.  It can handle one hyphen, but not two.  Brett Yount has logged this as a possible bug to be fixed.

  • Thanks for all the prompt replies.  However, rather than whip a dead horse, I went ahead and switched to using the LiveSearchSiteAuth.xml approach and got authenticated without issue.  Now I guess I'll watch, over the coming months, for the site to be picked up.

  • I cannot get verified either, it says to add the Meta tag before the <body> but this Office live webspace does not give me access to that area of the page.

    I also Cannot add anything to the root of my website, Victoryservice.net since I do not have access to the root for adding a robots.txt or any type of verification html or xml pages.
