Do I need to leave my client PC's running overnight in order to backup to WHS ?

Question

Hi,
I'm in the early stage's of setting up and testing my WHServer.
I've been looking through this forum and found out some good information so far and still searching as there is lot's to see.
Anyway, to my question,
I haven't as yet activated the backup feature to any of my client's yet, so I wanted to know if I have to switch on each client on the night of backup or whether WHServer use's a Wake-On-Lan feature to power up each client for it's backup ?
A good explanation of how the backup feature works would be great.
Thanks.Monday, January 19, 2009 12:59 AM

The answer depends on what version of the Connector you installed on your clients.
The latest version (which you should always be running, lest you have connection issues to the WHS, as well as permanent 'network health' warnings on all of your clients, due to the version mismatch) does have a selectable option to wake the client from Sleep/Hibernation for backup, or to not do so.
Note, this is configured on the client, not on your WHS. The server does not wake the client; rather, the client wakes itself to start the backup (in other words, WOL is not used.)
Also, a client can only wake itself from Sleep or Hibernation. If it's OFF, it cannot turn itself on.
For a full explanation, you should read the Home Computer Backup documentation.

Chris

Hi,

You can allow the Connector software to wake your client from Hibernate or Standby mode to backup. Some configurations may face difficulties to wake up completely enough or to fall into sleep again, since the OS Powermanagement is not under control of the Connector.
The other option (which I prefer) is to put the backup window in the WHS console under Settings/Backup into a time, in which the clients are usually on. (This saves also electrical power and reduces the noise of computers during the night.)
After the initial backup an average backup job should be completed in 5 to 10 minutes, given not too many files are changed, so the impact on a working user is limited.
Best greetings from Germany
