Remote Access to Computers RRS feed

  • Question

  • sorry if this was asked already, I did research and couldn't find it...

I have been able to remotelly log in my WHS (although still facing issues with time out when trying to get the console login.. I have found the answer to this and will fix tonight when back at home). But on the Remote Access Web Page, second tab, COMPUTERS, its says that my other PC at home has the connection disabled so I can't connect to it.

I did look around yesterday on the control panel of the PC and couldn't preciselly find where to enable this. I did enable remote access to the desktop, but I am not sure if that is for getting help from others using VISTA or XP only and not through WHS.

    thanks,

  • Only certain operating systems support incoming Remote Desktop connections:
    • Windows XP Professional
    • Windows Media Center
    • Vista Business
    • Vista Enterprise
    • Vista Ultimate
XP Home, and Vista Basic and Home don't support incoming connections. This support is a part of the operating system, so there's no easy way to enable it on OSes that don't already have it other than by upgrading.

  • hold on, the PC at home is running Vista Ultimate, but the one I am using to try to connect remotelly is using XP...

and to be honest, I still have not installed the latest version of the remote connector on the laptop (XP). but I suppose it does not matter, once this is a web based session, right ?

  • You're correct, WHS uses an ActiveX control for Remote Desktop to machines on your LAN.

  • so it should be working right ? how do I setup my Win Vista home PC to accept the remote connection from WHS, when connected from the web outside ..

  • On the Vista PC, right click My Computer and select Properties.Click Remote Settings.  In the Remote Desktop section, select Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure).

Also, if you're running Windows Live OneCare, you'll need to change the firewall settings there, as well.  By default, OneCare sets the firewall "scope" for the Remote Desktop port (3389) to the local subnet only.

  • thanks Doug... I need to fix the setting on OneCare then, because the other one I already did last night. Will try later tonight and update you afterwards. Great! thanks

  • I have three client PCs -- all running Vista Ultimate.  They all have the "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)" option checked, and they all have Remote Desktop (the program, not the port) allowed on the Windows Firewall.  In addition, they are all running Microsoft Forefront Client Security, which uses the same underlying antivirus engine as OneCare.  I am able to connect to all three of these PCs using Remote Desktop within my local network.

However, when I connect to the WHS site remotely, two of the PCs show up as "Available for Connection" and the third shows up as "Connection Disabled".  I am able to connect to the two available PCs without issue.  Any idea why I can't connect to the third one?

  • What option is selected for which computers can access the PC that you can't reach remotely?   Any computer (including those on the Internet) or Local subnet only?

  • All three PCs have remote desktop open to "Any Computer (including those on the Internet)".

  • In comparing the settings between one of the working PCs and the non-working PC, I noticed some differences in the Vista "Network and Sharing Center".  The two working PCs had the following settings:

    • Network discovery: On
    • File sharing: Off
    • Public folder sharing: Off
    • Printer sharing: Off
    • Password protected sharing: On
    • Media sharing: Off

The one PC that wasn't working had the following settings:

    • Network discovery: On
    • File sharing: On
    • Public folder sharing: Off
    • Printer sharing: Off
    • Password protected sharing: On
    • Media sharing: Off

So I went ahead and turned file sharing off on the non-working PC.  At first, this didn't seem to make any difference, as I was still unable to connect to it.  But then I rebooted the PC, and suddenly I was able to connect to it.  I can't think of any reason off-hand why this setting would have affected remote desktop, but as long as it work, I'm happy!

  • File Sharing is on for all my Vista Ultimate machines and RDP works fine for all of them.  Many times a reboot of the client or the WHS server is needed to resolve "odd" issues?

First, you should start your own thread (instead of adding to one that is hasn't been posted to in over 3 years).  Second, your pics weren't viewable.  Try uploading your images to a pic-hosting website, them link to them in your post.
