  • Girlwivattitude,

The current Product Key being used on your system is non-genuine for one of two reasons:

    - The key was made using a non-Microsoft sanctioned Key Generator

    - The key was reported lost or stolen from the original purchaser.

Can you verify that your COA matches your Product Key? If it does not you can try the following:

1 - Reinstall Windows so your COA matches your Product Key (install using your COA as the Product Key) - This is the preferred method by Microsoft, as it will be a fresh copy, void of potential hacked binary files and security loops that may have been created to bypass WGA. We know this is usually not the user preference, but it is the safest method.

The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key – all without a reinstall! http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50346&clcid=0x409

Note: This is provided no core system files are corrupted. If they are you will need to complete a clean install of your system.

If your COA does match the product key being used on your system I recommend filing a counterfeit report, it MAY be a high quality counterfeit (which MAY qualify you for a *free* WGA kit) – Counterfeit report is located here: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/Reporting.mspx

  • Girl,

Right now, your computer has a Volume Licensing (VL) edition of XP Pro installed (Line 7), and that installation was done with an invalid Volume Licensing Key (VLK) (Line 2).  VLKs are invalidated by Microsoft at the report of the original keyholder for such reasons as the key was lost, stolen, compromised, or misused.  Also, MS may have invalidated the key if it was generated by a non-MS Key Generator program.

As a rule, VL editions of XP should not be sold to individual consumers.  Businesses, schools and gov'ts normally use VL editions for flexibility in installing many computers.

This is why you were seeing the "software counterfeiting" messages on your computer, because the current installation of XP is an unauthorized installation.

Please compare the Product Key on your Certificate of Authenticity (COA) that should be affixed to the side or back of the computer, or the Product Key on the inner folder of the Windows XP Pro retail package, with the one reported above.

If they are not the same Product Key, but they are for the same flavor of Windows (both are Home or both are Pro, for example), you may be able to "genuine-ize" your installation by using the Key Updater Utility:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50346&clcid=0x409  The Key Updater Utility requires full internet access to work, so please be sure to set a special rule in your firewall program (if you are using one) for it.

If they are the same, you may have hi-quality counterfeit materials.  To compare, please have a look at tis link:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/counterfeit.mspx

Let us know how you make out....
