    First off, you are in the wrong forum. You should be posting this query in the Server forums instead.

    Windows 2008 uses the DC Locator process to determine to which DC a client authenticates with. It uses the following algorithm:

    - Try to find a DC in the same site
    - If no DC is available in the same site, try to find any DC in the domain

    However, Windows 2008 introduces the Try Next Closest Site Group Policy setting to streamline DC searches. With this setting enabled, you can direct clients to the next closest site when they cannot find a DC in the closest site.
