Office 2007 validation on Vista RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am still having a problem validating MS Office Small Business 2007.  The retailer has now sent me two separate licenses for this product and I have received the same "invalid product key" for both licenses when trying to install on a HP Slimline PC that came with Vista.

Is this version a trial version of Office which came with your system or maybe you installed prior installing Office Ultimate 2007?  You are receiving an error status 104 which is an unknown PID. This could be attributed to a Beta/Trial version of Office you previously installed and used. In turn maybe some of the byproduct was left behind which may have attributed to a false positive error 104.  Please use the Office disk and uninstall the software.  The Microsoft Office in question may need reinstallation and then uninstall using the disk.  Please touch back with me and let me know if you have a beta/trial version of Office 2007.
    1) Logon to the PC that is experiencing the notifications as a user with “ADMINISTRATOR” privileges.
    2) Download the tool: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012   click RUN.
    3) When the tool loads, click “CONTINUE”.
    4) Is the “RESOLVE” button available? If so, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool repair the issue.
    5) From the Windows tab, click the COPY button.
    6) Please reply back to this post and PASTE the entire results into reply of this post.
We can take a look at it and offer you some suggestions as to how to resolve this issue.

  • No, this is not a trial copy.   (BTW, I uninstalled the original trial copy and started over with the installation CDs.  "Resolve" did not repair the problem.)

Is this more of an Office 2007 or Vista related issue?

    Thank you for your assistance.

Thank you for performing the diagnostic test again and re-posting. The diagnostic results allow our team to analyze in depth each customers situation so we may find a solution. Please look @ the following Knowledge Base (KB) article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/en-us. Here you will find detailed instructions for removing beta and/or trial release versions of Office Suite 2007 or program. Sometimes more work is required for removal because remnants may be left behind which the normal uninstall didn't catch.  Please follow the KB article to re-uninstall the trial version you previously had installed. In turn restart your computer and validate Office again.

Important:  This article contains information about how to modify the registry. Make sure that you back up the registry before you modify it. What's "Office Vista Trial"?

Also, here is an excerpt from MS KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828958 regarding Reduced Functionality Mode for Office:

When you install a Microsoft Office suite or individual program, you are prompted to activate that Office suite or program. This step-by-step article describes how to activate the different license versions of Office suites and individual programs. This article also describes how to activate a trial version of an Office suite or individual program. If you decide to activate the license later, an activation counter decrements every time that you start an Office program. If the counter reaches zero, the Office programs start to run in reduced-functionality mode.

Note In reduced-functionality mode, programs function like a viewer. When a program is running in reduced-functionality mode, many menu items are unavailable (dimmed). This blocks access to that menu functionality. Some of the limitations of reduced-functionality mode include the following:

You cannot create any new documents.
You can view existing documents, but you cannot edit them.
You can print documents, but you cannot save them.

  • Hello Rafael,

Can you tell me what the exact problem is your experiencing? Also did you receive any error codes? First I would like for you to visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine then locate "Validate Office" in the upper right corner.  Please click this button and follow the information. Please restart your system and let us know if your still having the same problem.  Thank you,

I just purchased a legitimate copy of Office Small Business 2007 from Future Shop and when I tried to download some PowerPoint templates it told me that my version was not genuine.

When I went to  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/  and clicked on 'Validate Office' I got a 'Failed Validation' notice.

Under 'more details' it shows that 'Microsoft Samll Business 2007' is valid but '2007 Microsoft Office system ' failed.

What is '2007 Microsoft Office system '?  I just paid almost $700 for this software and I am not impressed. Please let me know how I can validate my software without having to be a computer programmer?  :-)

  • Ashtil,

Did you receive any error codes and/or statements whatsoever indicating a failed validation?  Please try validating windows and office again by visiting the following location:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine next click on the "Validate Windows" and "Validate Office" button in the upper right corner. What happens? The genuine site will provide you with valuable information explaining the WGA program. Another site for helping customers identify genuine vs. non-genuine software is located here:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ The link provides information for identifying how to tell if Windows software is genuine vs. non-genuine.

Please run the MGA Diagnostic Test.  The test results coupled with any previous error codes and/or validation statements will allow us to analyze your particular problem so we may provide a resolution or other guidance. Please follow the steps below for running the MGA Diagnostic test then please post your results back in this thread:

Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the

Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is telling us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

    Thank you,

Hi Stephen, just to clarify, I am running Vista Home Premium NOT Windows XP.

My issue is that the following shows up (Red font) when I 'Validate Office'.  There is a error code [0x80180104]  that will not allow me to complete the validation of Microsoft Office Small Business 2007.

    =========================================================================================

    Microsoft Office Small Business 2007

The product(s) listed above completed validation. However, as a result of the failed or incomplete validation(s) listed below, this computer is not eligible for the benefits of genuine Office. Remove the application(s) that failed or could not complete validation and run the validation tool again.

    2007 Microsoft Office system:
    Validation Failed

No valid Office key was detected. This is a strong indication that the Office product installed is not genuine.

I ran the MGA Diagnostic tool. Here are the results:

  • Hello Ashtil,

Thank you for running the MGA diagnostic test and posting the results. The diagnostic results indicate you are receiving an unknown Product Identification (PID) 104 error code. There may be a couple factors which are driving this particular error code. First I noticed you have two Office Suites installed:   2007 Microsoft Office system and Microsoft Office Small Business 2007.  Many times a customer will receive this code because there is a trial and/or beta version installed.  Here are some examples.  Is the Office Suite a trial version which came pre-installed with your system? Have you installed any trial versions of Office after purchasing the computer? Please remove any trial versions of Office currently installed. Should you have any problems removing Office please review the following Knowledge Based (KB) article here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/en-us

When Trial versions of Office are left on the computer and retail versions of Office are subsequently installed alongside the Trial the OGA control sees the Trial version, which cannot be activated or validated. The computer will be flagged   as having a non-genuine installation of Office.

In turn maybe some of the remnants were left behind during the un-install/removal process. This may have caused the false positive error code 104 which you have received.  Please use the Office disk and uninstall the software.  The Microsoft Office in question may need reinstallation and then uninstall using the disk.  Once you have completed the above steps let’s try validating Office again at http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and clicking the “Validate Office” button.  After you have completed the Office removal process and validation is still failing please follow the steps below:

    1) Logon to the PC that is experiencing the notifications as a user with “ADMINISTRATOR” privileges.
    2) Download the tool:
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012   click RUN.
