Son's Laptop getting message "Windows not genuine"

Question
-
I am trying to help my son with his laptop, for some unknown reason a message from Microsoft?? keep appearing on it's screen.
I have tried to re-activate it but the screen keeps giving me a message that there is no link to this file, "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. I clike OK and I get an error code "0x80070483"
This problem started about two years after he had it repaired and version of Windows 7 Pro was installed it ran good til last week.
I had intended to upgrade to Windows 8 and make a clean install but am afraid the Windows 8 upgrade will not work since I need to have a working copy of Windows 7 Pro running when I start the install and formating of his laptop.
Would someone be kind enough to help?
God bless
Jim

As far as installing an upgrade to Windows 7 as a clean install is concerned - look here http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/windows-7-pro-upgrade-will-not-activate-after/b7b1144a-9e60-432c-9381-244b1c8a6575?page=1
I understand that similar procedures work in Windows 8 - but I haven't tried them.

To properly analyze and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the diagnostic report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012)
Once downloaded, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button.
Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your post. (please do not edit the report.)

As George says, we need to see an MGADiag report.
for reference, the error code you quote translates as...
0x80070483, No application is associated with the specified file for this operation.
Which could refer to a number of things (most likely vbs files, I suspect)

Hi George,
I hope this is what you need.
Thanks for trying to help, the original OS was Vista I believe, the key is still on the laptop's bottom, the person working on the laptop formated the drive and lost the restore. My son then bought a version of Windows 7 and everything was working for about 2 years then messages started and the screen would have a black background.
Again Thanks,
God bless
Jim

Hi Noel,
Thanks for responding, what are vbs files?
Thanks

VBS=Visual Basic Script - a lot of the grunt-work for activation and validation is done by a vbs file (slmgr.vbs)
You have a number of problems....
1) Your motherboard was manufactured in 2007 - well before Windows 7 was launched.
2) You have an apparent BIOS SLIC table for Windows 7 - which is impossible in a machine of that age.
3) Your Product Key is an OEM_SLP Key, which is only valid on machine which were factory-installed with Windows 7
Add all that together, and you have an Activation Exploit - a hacker's tool to circumvent validation and activation requirements - which breaks the terms of the Windows License, and may leave the system vulnerable to malware.
You need to reformat and reinstall with legitimate media and Key,
Your cheapest option is to order a set of Recovery disks from the manufacturer and use that. It will put the system back to the same state it was in when it left the factory.
The other options are to purchase an Upgrade to either Windows7 or Windows 8 (Win 7 would be easier to install) and use the various methods available to clean install those; or to purchase a Full license for either Windows 7 or Win8 and clean install that.

You can purchase either Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit (Full Version) - OEM or Microsoft Windows 8 Professional 64-bit (Full Version) - OEM and perform a "clean install" which is what you'll need to do in order to replace the counterfeit copy of Windows 7 Ultimate that is currently installed on the laptop. However, you can order Acer eRecovery Media (for a nominal fee) which will install the original Windows operating system that came with the laptop.

Hi Noel,
Lots of frightening information, how can we protect ourselves when we buy on the internet? And why did the laptop work so well for so long? about 2 years,
You mention upgrading to Windows 7 or 8, but my understanding is a past version has to be installed and activated to do the upgrade, somewhere I read that you can do a clean install of the upgrade to Windows8 if you start with one of the lower versions and somewhere after you start the upgrade you format your drive and then continue installing Windows 8, I read this at "pcsupport.about.com/od/windows8//ss/windows8-clean-install-part-1" would you give advice please.
I may have to alter the above removing the http and htm so I can post here, this forum does not allow me to post urls for some reason.
Thanks
God bless
Jim

Hi Carey,
Do you think this laptop can run a 64 bit version of Windows, and I thought OEM versions were for building new computers. I think your last suggestion is probably the best, this is an old laptop, about 6 years old, an Acer Aspire 7720Z, as my son was saying a new OS is worth more than the laptop. I'll see what I can find on the Acer website.
If you have any more ideas please let me know. I am a little afraid of buying on the internet after this happened. Any way to protect ourselves?
Thanks
God bless
Jim

The Aspire 7720Z Series Specifications indicate either Windows XP or Windows Vista originally came with that PC. If it were my PC, I would get either Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 32-bit - OEM or Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 32-bit - OEM. Windows 7 32-bit drivers are available for download for that computer.

Thank you everyone,
I am trying to get a download or buy an eRecovery Media disk for the Aspire 7720Z laptop, I can see it on the American website but I can change the state to province nor the country to Canada so I sent them an email asking what to do. I any of you know where I can buy or download this disk I would appreciate it. I can still make out the keys on the bottom of the laptop so hopefully I should be able to save his laptop.
Again Thanks
God bless you all.
