Win7 Windows Genuine is broke RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am now beyond frustrated - I've been fighting this problem all week and can not get Windows to correct itself.  I've owned my Sony VAIO for about a year and a half.  About a month and a half ago, the hard drive began to have problems.  I cloned the hard drive to a new hard drive and swapped the two so that the new hard drive was in the VAIO.  Everything worked fine.

Last weekend I came in to use my computer and found a pop-up window tilted "Windows Activation Technology" telling me that my computer is not running genuine Windows.

    I've tried the following:

    1) Downloaded an ISO image of Win7 and attempted to "Update" the computer - would run all the way through the install and tell me that my hardware is not capable of running Win7 - even though the initial compatibility check was fine and I've obviously been running Win7 since I purchased the VAIO in the first place.

    2) I click on the Start button, right click on Computer and select properties - it tells me that Windows is activated and shows me the genuine Windows logo.

    3) Have run sfc /scannow.

    4) Have run slui.exe 3 - and when prompted keyed in my Windows Activation key.  The key was accepted, yet I still get the pop-up telling me that my computer is not running genuine Windows.

    5) Have forced the system to allow me register the system by telephone (slui.exe 4) - keying in the numbers propmpted by Microsoft and being told that it was successful and that my genuine Windows was now activate - and I still get the pop-up telling me that I am not running genuine Windows.

From what I can tell from MGADiag several files must have gotten corrupted when the original hard disk was going bad, not sure why the system didn't report issues earlier.  See the report below.  My question - how can I fix these files or allow the system to run an "Update" with the Win7 Home Premium disc that I have?

Here are the results from the MGADiag.exe tool:

  • The common cause for these mismatches is a faulty Intel Rapid Storage Tech driver

Download and install the latest version from....

     http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730

    you want this one:  iata_enu.exe

reboot then run another MGADiag report and post the results.

  • Ran and installed the iata_enu.exe successfully.  Looks like it at least fixed my ability to download Windows Updates.   However, the Windows Activation Technologies pop-up appeared again this afternoon telling me that the computer is not running genuine Windows.
