Just setup Live Mesh. Only placeholders show up on the 2nd computer. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just setup Live Mesh.  The first computer is a MacBook Pro.  The second computer is a desktop with WinXP SP3 installed.  After setting up the WinXP computer, I only have placeholders of the files on my Mac. I also tried creating a new file on my WinXP computer but a placeholder only shows up on my Mac.  The same thing happens if I create a new file on my Mac, a placeholder only shows up on WinXP.

    Any ideas what going on?

  • How long ago is "just set up?" If the placeholders are there, it may well be that the sync is still underway. it doesn't happen instantly and can take quite some time if the PC is active. Are you synchronizing P2P or are you also synchronizing with the Live Desktop? if the latter, have you checked the Live Desktop to confirm that the files have been uploaded to there?

  • I am syncing P2P, not to live desktop.  I set this up about an hour ago and the placeholders just went away.  These are small 3KB text files, about 4 files.  Why would it take 1 hour to sync these??

  • Well, the good news is that the files *did* sync as expected. The best answer I can give is that the Live Mesh team has repeatedly said that they are working hard to improve the P2P sync process. I imagine that the delay in Sync is one of those issues that they are addressing.

  • Well, I just found another MS solution, Live Sync.  For some reason this works 10x better than Live Mesh.  Not sure why MS has so many of the same products...lol

  • Yes, there are quite a few products coming from Microsoft that seem to do the same thing. :-)
As I understand it, Live Mesh will be the platform for other services and offerings - including future 3rd party applications. Live Sync is a peer to peer product that is the next Generation of FolderShare, which was a 3rt party program purchased by Microsoft some time back. And then there is Groove, which is part of the Office family, that also synchronizes files. I would iamgine that these will all eventually merge in some way.
I'm glad that LiveSync answers your needs right now. Another benefit for that free program is that it is supported and is not a beta at the moment.
