Money Keeps Asking Me To Link A Download To An Account RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

    I am using Money 2004 Standard Edition on Windows 7.

    I just opened a Sam's Club credit card account last month, and the holding bank (GE) allows for downloads to Microsoft Money, albeit, the file is offered in QIF format, but Money can read it nevertheless.

    Money asked me to link this download to an account, and I did, but Money keeps asking me to do it every time I download transactions from this institution. Is this unusual for a QIF file?

    Regards

  • Upon opening the file with notepad, I see that there is no embedded account number information. Is that information necessary for Money to assign an OFX file to an account?

  • Can anyone see this?

  • I see it. I am thinking it is normal to ask each time, but I am not sure. As you point out, QIF files don't have account numbers.

    Never?

    Is there a way to edit the file and add an account number?

  • Test post sent from NTTP bridge.

    My apologies for responding to previous posts in HTML. I think I have it figured out now.

  • It has been a while since I played with the QIF files. One way to confirm no account numbers is to export an account to QIF, and look at the file. I am pretty sure there is no account number field defined in QIF.

    Do they allow any other formats besides QIF, such as QFX?

    One gotcha is that if you have have two transactions in the QIF file, the payee, amount, and date are identical, and you import as a statement, Money will ignore the second one as a duplicate. So if you got two cups of coffee with two separate credit card transactions, one would be missed.

    Actually, your posts looked fine on the social.microsoft.com site.

    Yes, they do offer QFX, and it includes the account number, but Money is still asking me to assign an account for the file - even after importing it for the first time.

    I'm beginning to think this is a lost cause.

    I would opt for the QFX file. There is a way to just "run" the file from your browser, and it gets associated with Money. If the downloaded file is a *.qfx file, consider this:

    If you want to associate the .qfx extension to OFX files so that
    Money can import it directly, you can create a .reg file named
    qif2ofx.reg.  Then web access to .qif files would work the same as
    for .ofx files.  That .reg file would contain the 15 lines that ar
    between the two demarcation lines:

    ==========begin qif2ofx.reg===============================
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.qfx]
    "Content Type"="text/qfx"
    @="ofx.Document"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.qfx\ofx.Document]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.qfx\ofx.Document\ShellNew]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/x-qfx]
    "Extension"=".qfx"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\text/qfx]
    "Extension"=".qfx"
    ==========end qif2ofx.reg===============================

    Just run that file after you create it.  So thereafter, if you use
    the web etc to bring in a .qif file, it is treated as if it were
    named *.ofx.  The Money install associated .ofx with itself.

    It may be that a later version would remember the proper account better. Maybe it would help to make sure the account number for the account is the same one coming in on the <ACCTID> record in the QFX file.

    I confirmed the account number is the same, but Money 2004 can't remember which account the file is associated with.

    I don't guess your registry fix will change that, will it?
