need to restore a multi hard drive back up to one hard drive. RRS feed

  • Question

  • i have 2 drive in my computer sunning 7 Ultimate x64.

my drive set up looks like this

    16GB SSD C: OS

    500GB HDD E: Programs

I have having a few problems, 1. running out of room on C: 2. some programs not working.

What i am wanting to do is have a single drive setup. I have a lot of programs that take a long time to install. Is there any way to have WHS take the multi drive back up had have it restore to one drive.

    1. Buy a drive that will fit in the computer, and that's large enough to hold both partitions. (In your case, that means a drive that's at least 516 GB in size, so a 600 GB or larger drive.)
    2. Boot the restore CD. At some point you will be given the option to run the disk manager to allow you to partition the new drive. Do so, and create one partition that's 16 GB of larger, and one that's 500 GB or larger. I'd go with something like 60 GB for the system partition, and the rest for the data partition. Mark the system partition "active".
    3. Finish the restore, restoring everything to the new disk.
    4. Boot from the new disk (it should boot).
Note that the above will only work if you haven't excluded a lot of folders from your backups. A lot of people want to "save space", so they exclude a lot from their backups, and that can result in installed software no longer working after a restore or other problems.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
