Some nasty bug has come to my Live Mesh RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Since a few days Live Mesh is not working properly anymore. I have 4 PCs 3 of which I use regularily 2 of which are Win7 machines and one is Vista.
I never had any problems and I have been using Live Mesh for over a year now.
Now all of a sudden syncing has become totally erratic.

The live desktop will have different files (some synced some not) than the two machines. Some things sync some don't.
It is most obvious in my IE8 favourites folder which I use to sync my bookmarks over all machines. The bookmarks will sometimes upload to the Live Desktop from one machine but won't be synced to the other machines.
    Does anyone experience similar issues?

  • Can you trace back the erratic bahavior to the addition of a machine or machines to the Mesh or an upgrade of the OS on one or more machines?
Have you reviewed the notifier/news for information about possible conflicts?
Have you considered changing the sync settings for one or more machines for each Mesh folder (from the Live Desktop) to not sync the folder, then proceed with adding the folder back to the device as a Mesh folder, merging it with the original to see if all files will then sync?

New machine: Yes likely. I just bought my new Envy 13 laptop (Win7 HP 64bit) and added it last week. But the problem affects all machines.
Conflicts: Yes I got some 15 messages or so but they all seemed to be about some MS standard bookmarks in my Favorites folder which I just deleted.

I think the problem is really that things get updated to the Live desktop but not synced down to the machines.

I have not played around with deleting and merging mesh folders because this would affect my work quite a bit. So far I am hanging in and waiting for a fix.

  • Your best bet would be the brute force method of turning off sync for a device and then turning it back on, merging the folders. That usually resolves unexplained sync problems like yours.
How do you like the Envy 13? I've been eyeing it and am not sure that I can justify the price. ;-)

Hmm.. Thanks for the help but I see other people having the same issues here. So I will wait at least a bit for a bug fix. They might roll back a version or sth. If I have to do manually what you suggested to all my mesh folders it will take me ages and I might then as well stop using Mesh altogether. There really should be an option to tell a folder: "Go check back with the Live Desktop and make sure that you are really in sync"

    Envy13:
PROS: Awesome bright screen, nice battery life even with just the built in battery (see below), have rarely felt a notebook so responsive (that might subjective)
Light and shiny, I like the keyboard
    CONS:
The extra slice battery was damaged when I got it and didn't fit.
The Intel GPU for battery mode does some weird stuff when trying to correct for ambient light which from time to time makes fonts unreadable, found no way to switch it off so far
No HDMI to VGA adapter in my box (not included in the UK) so if you have an VGA projector you are screwed

  • First, thanks for the Envy review. :-) I had read that the extra battery slice seemed to be poorly designed for attachment. I'm going to have to go see one hands on soon, I guess.

Yes, a forced sync would be excellent and it has been asked for before. Unfortunately, the remove/add is the solution that most often kick starts things when they appear to fail. I trust that the sync will be improved greatly moving forward. The Live Sync product doesn't seem to suffer from this as much as Live Mesh does, although it isn't perfect, either. When removing/adding, depending on the number of folders, as long as everything is actually pretty much in sync on all devices, you should encounter conflicts despite the warning when merging and it catches up quickly. On the other hand, I have personally had machines that seemed to give up on being synchronized despite being connected and signed in and then after a few reboots it magically began to sync again.

  • I tried what you suggested but I think the bug also prevents the solution you suggested:

When I delete a folder from a machine and try to resync it I get an error from the MOE:
404: Server could not find the specified resource

So it seems my machines can only upload but not download from the Mesh/Live Desktop

    :(

  • Not delete the folder - on the Live Desktop, change the sync settings for the folder to not sync with the PC in question. That will cause the local folder to change from a Live Mesh fodler (blue) to a normal folder (yellow). Once it is no longer a mesh fodler, you can delete or move it as desired on the local machine. While it is still associated with the Mesh, deleting it will cause the sync to break and you will get the error you saw.
So, restore the folder from the Recycle Bin on the PC you deleted it.
Go to the Live Desktop and change the sync settings for the folder. Wait for the folder on the local PC to revert to a normal Explorer fodler.
Then you can offer the folder again and choose to merge it with the existing local folder.

  • Update:

This is embarrassing but I managed to trace back the problem to a mesh folder that had been moved some time ago by accident on 1 machine.
Still I don't see why everything else had to stop working including a number of totally unrelated mesh folders.
In any case I moved back the folder then did some of the things Stephen (thanks) suggested and now things seem to work again.

  • Don't be embarrased. I actually consider this a bug. It is too easy to screw up the sync relationships by moving or deleting a Mesh folder from a local PC.
