What are the .FNL files? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I installed Live Mesh onto a new machine this evening. I've gone out and come home to find that there are zero bytes free on my C: drive because its filled up with .FNL files in c:\documents and settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Live Mesh\GacBase\Assembler

    What are these files?
    Can I safely delete them?
How can I prevent them appearing again?

    Thanks
    Jamie

  • Hi DNeimke,

The .prt files are ones that are still in the process of being assembled (whereas the .fnl files are ones that have been completely assembled but haven't been realized yet, as I mentioned above).  You can safely delete the .prt files as well.  As with the .fnl files, Live Mesh will just re-download the files as necessary.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Hi Jamie,

.FNL files are files that have been completely downloaded by the fetcher but not realized (moved over to the right location in the Live Mesh folder).  You can safely delete them.  This will cause a re-fetch of the files when necessary.

Some other members of the Live Mesh team would like to look into this issue more deeply, though.  Would you mind submitting a bug report with logs (and posting the Connect Feedback ID here)?  We'd appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Did you try opening them? If you have trouble with Notepad or WordPad, download XVI32 (you'll need to search for it - I forget where I got it) and look at the file in hex mode.

Or wait for someone to answer... Of course, if you've got no free space, you'll need to delete something to download a file.

Or try stopping Live Mesh and see if it cleans any of those files up.

Out of curiosity, how on earth did you figure out those files were there? Not exactly a place I'd think of looking...

  • I simply traversed the filesystem. Worked out which top-level folder had the most stuff in it and checked all its subfolders and so on...

  • 10.8GB's worth on a different machine. What ARE these files?

By the way, I opened one up in notepad and saw this at the top of it:

I do have a Zune and I have my Zune collection stored on this device so some of that kinda makes sense. I don't have iTunes on here though and never have.

    What's going on?

  •  Hey Ben, I just checked that location on my filesystem and noticed a large number of .prt files.

What are they?  And... can I safely delete those?

  • Jamie,

This issue is scheduled for investigation following the work we are doing now for our next major client release.  Everyone is heads down trying to get things as perfect as possible; as soon as we have this next release out the door your issue is scheduled for investigation.  We have completed the initial triage and investigation of this issue and we have assigned it to a developer for further analysis (nothing fruitful in the initial examination).

The feedback of our customers drives much of what we do and helps us to make better decisions regarding where we spend our resources.  Your feedback and participation are very valuable to us and your patience is very appreciated.  I left a note in the bug report asking the developer to ping me as soon as there is a meaningful update so that I can expedite following up with you as soon as we know something.

In the mean time; please continue to let us know as things come up.

    Thank you!

  • Before reading this thread I went ahead and deleted *all* the files in the Assembler directory. Somehow that caused my Live Mesh Folder on that machine to turn into a normal folder and lose connection to the mesh.

Now I erased that folder and synced it all up again, this time I ended up with less .prt files than before, but there is still about 800mb of .prt files there that I'm really scared of deleting.

I opened an issue about this, feedback id: #363711
