PS2010 - Project Dependencies - Portfolio Analysis RRS feed

  • Question

  • I created a Finish to Start dependency between two projects within Portfolio Analysis.  I had assumed that in the Gantt chart view with the Analyze Resources view that this link would be visually shown, but it appears not, and the project start and finish dates come from the dates defined in the resource plan (as specified in the define properties section of the portfolio analysis).  Any ideas how to get this working, or am I using it incorrectly!

  • I'm beginning to agree with you, I can't get it to work at all.

  • Hi Ben,

Go to Options in the Resource Analysis. You should see two check boxes: "Project" and "Finish to Start". Check "Finish to Start" and click on Recalculate.

  • A few additional hints:

    - No, these dependencies do not appear in the gantt chart.

    - The dependency doesn't seem to work if the projects aren't planned in the right order from the start. It will only make sure that when you move project 1, project 2 will move too. But if project 2 is planned to start before the end date of project 1, the calculation fails. Not sure if this is by design...

    - If moving the project means sending it outside of the planning period, the calculation fails.

  • Hi Livia,

I have checked the buttons, clicked on "reload", but it is still not working as expected.  Any other ideas?

  • Hm... I've been playing around with this feature today as well, trying to make it work. After I've tried many different scenarios, my conclusion is: either it throws an error message or it doesn't do anything at all, but it certainly doesn't move projects.

The only benefit of using it at the moment is that you at least notice scheduling inconsistencies because of the red message at the top of the window, and that's all. Then you have to go and find out by yourself what the conflict is and solve it manually. I doubt if it was the intention for this feature.
