  • ‘Hotmail’ founder Sabeer Bhatia has done it again. Bangalore-based InstaColl promoted by Bhatia has now announced the launch a system titled ‘Live Documents’ that is much of an amalgamation of online-offline office suites having features comparable to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

What is significant is that though the product took two years to complete, it is truly indigenous and can rightly be called ‘Made in India’.

In addition to posing a threat to Microsoft’s revenue, Bhatia’s ‘Live Documents’ incorporate many of the MS Office suites that Bill Gates’ company has done little with since their launch.

For instance, Microsoft has done nothing to improve the Excel, nor introduced any new graphics to it. On the contrary, ‘Live Documents’ will improve upon these facilities. Hence, it is expected that ‘Live Documents’ can do great damage to Microsoft, like Bhatia’s ‘Hotmail’ and previously done to e-mail.

‘Live Documents’ use all the rich Internet application technologies, including Flash and Flex, and permits the users to view and edit documents with any common browser, on any operating system, from anywhere. In addition, the ‘Live Document’ application also enables the users’ collaborations on real time basis and Instacoll claims that as many as 3,000 people can join forces together on a single document on real-time basis.

Speaking at a function organized to announce the launch in Mumbai, Instacoll founders Bhatia, Sumanth Raghavendra and Kaushal Cavale emphasized that initially ‘Live Documents’ will have a limited release and be available globally within 3-4 months. Even the pricing of the product has been kept reasonable considering the requirements of the individual users as well as enterprises. In all probability it will be priced at $50 for an year and $10 for a month, the company said.
