Home Server Reinstallation Problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had the evaluation copy of WHS up and running.  The evaluation period came to an end, and I ordered a copy and performed the reinstallation sequence as suggested in these forums.  WHS is up and running on the server, but it will not connect with the Home Server Console on my computer.  I've attempted to reinstall the home server connector software, but the wizard is unable to locate the server.  Any suggestions?

Can you ping your server both by name and IP address?  Did you try unplugging the cable between your modem and your router?  Can you copy and paste an ipconfig /all of your server as well as one of your clients?

  • Hi Phil,
did you uninstall the Connector software first and then use the Connector software delivered on CD with the package?
Did you at any time alter the hosts file on the client to point to an IP address, which is no longer assigned to the server with the same name?

    Best greetings from Germany

  • I was able to ping the server by name and IP address.  The router and modem are one and the same.  I don't know where to look for the information to respond to your last question.

  • Yes, I did attempt to uninstall the connector software and then use the connector software delivered with the OEM server DVD.  I don't think I altered the hosts file, I did not do anything outside of that which is prompted during installation.

Open a command prompt window and type ipconfig /all in it, then paste the results here.

Can you open the Console from the server desktop and check the component numbers (Settings button, Resources tab)?  When you attempted to reinstall the software, did you also try from the server shares?  The setup.exe file can be found at \\server\software\home server connector software.

Yes, all components are version 6.0.2030.0.  I have tried to run it from the server shared folders.  I can browse to the folders from my laptop, but setup.exe still won't locate the server, even though my laptop is running setup.exe for WHS connector from the server shared folder.

  • Your machines are - why ever - in different TCP-IP subnets. The Server address 209.30.160.5 is not even a regular private IP address, but a public one, which should not be used by private computers (unless it is a machine, which is directly connected to the Internet and got the address by the ISP).
Exposing the server to the Internet in that way is not a supported scenario.
So you have a wrong configured DHCP server there at least (maybe you created a reservation entry that is wrong?).
Also the DNS suffix may cause issues by automatically attach that suffix to the name of the server on DNS based name searches, which resolves either to the wrong machine or times out in some cases.

Your server is not getting an IP address from your router (the IP address for your server should be 192.168.1.xxx).  It looks like it's getting its address directly from your ISP.  Your server is plugged into your router, correct?  If not, plese plug it into the router, then reboot your server.  If it is, you might have to set a static IP for your server.
