Microsoft Genuine Advantage not running at all before downloads RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently purchase a new laptop computer with Windows 7 Operating System (with the latest updates), and have attempted downloads of Windows Virtual PC and XP Mode (Microsoft programs required for operation of legacy application software on the Windows 7).

The download process from the Microsoft sites (after initialization) first displays a dialogue box advising "Windows validation required," which I check on, but the system then takes tme to a blank Web page that says "Internet Explorer cannot display Web page," and validation and the downloads do not run. This has occurred at two Microsoft sites where I have attempted the downloads AND when I directly try and launch  Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool in an attempt to determine the problem.

What is causing Microsoft Genuine Advantage not to run, and how can I correct the situation, and ultimately, download the required files?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hello Arthur Aspen,

First thing to try is to go to http://microsoft.com/genuine/diag and click the Satrt Diagnostic. This site does not launch WGA, it just checks to see if your computer is configured to allow Validation to occure. If any problems are found, the site will assiste you in correcting it.

Once you get all green checkmarks from the Diag page, click the Validate Windows button and follow the directions.

If it validates as Genuine, you should be good to go.  Retry downloading the XP Mode.

If it Validates as Non-Genuine or Validation doesn't happen at all, then download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this thread. (NOTE: the Diagnostic Tool is a simple, self contained, exacutable program and does not have any dependencies on WGA to enable it to run, it just gathers information about the system. If the Diagnostic Tool is unable to run, there is likely a larger Windows level issue at play.)

    Thank you,

    Darin,

    Thanks for your help.

A work-around for the problem was resolved on my machine this way . . . Your specific remedy did not work, so I took my computer back to the technical support people where I purchased it, and they were able to connect, validate Windows 7 (Microsoft Genuine Advantage worked) and then start the needed download. We then deduced that the problem may have to with my Linksys home router and/or with Internet Explorer settings. I returned home and disconnected the Linksys router (which is connected to the Internet cable modem) and then connected directly to the Internet cable modem. I was then able to download the required files. So, there must be something with the router, or how it is configured, and/or with Internet Explorer settings, that prevented Microsoft Genuine Advantage from processing.

I need to re-connect the Linksys router for my network. Do you have any suggestions on router and/or Internet Explorer configuration settings to permit router use that ensures Microsoft Genuine Advantage will run correctly prior to downloads?

Thank you in advance, again! :)

  • having the same problem

i purchased the product in Jan 2010 and activated it and  passed the Genuine validation

on 4/2/2010 i went to MS site to get virtual PC to try out virtual server.... but got "This copy of Windows is not genuine"

SO I called 866 530 6599 as the Message Box insisted

they told me that their partner whom they gave some product keys were selling the product key ...so they disable all the product key associated with it..........

SO they are taking away my Product key while their partner are taking my money...

  • Hi HaloOfDeath (shudder...),

I don't know where to post it but please don't make an appendix to each and every post. If one tries to follow the threads, that's very confusing. Concerning the "big lawsuit": Speak with the guy who sold you a key he wasn't allowed to sell and claim a refund, or look at this site to see how to report the case to Microsoft, depending on your country, http://www.microsoft.com/howtotell/content.aspx?displaylang=en&pg=what. Thx!

  • Hi Halo,

you're a bit too much inclined to conspiracy theories. I don't know your sellers and how they got their keys (probably, MSDN or TechNet, both aren't for reselling and both are limited to "evaluation purposes"). But we mustn't create new assumptions. Put it simple: If you buy a Windows 7 copy from MS or any other store, you receive a product key for your personal use. If you sell this key to others, not to say repeatedly, there must be a mechanism to prevent the multi-use of a single license, or the software company (MS, in this case) would agree to give away their products as a free gift, only allowing the self-made reseller to make a profit of it. So, lose-lose for MS. Would this be what you want? I don't think so.

  • Hello Arthur Aspen,

As a rule, advice on how to configure home networking equipment would be very off-topic to this forum, but I think we can make one exception :-)

So-called "default settings" almost always work.

Please check the documentation that came with the Linksys router to learn how to do a "hard reset" of the router using the small, somewhat hidden reset button usually on the back of the router next to the power port.  This will put all router settings back to factory default.  Default router settings are usually secure enough for wired connections, but if this is a wireless router you will want to either disable the wireless functions if not currently using them, or set wireless security to the maximum level your participating wireless network nodes can support.

Since IE worked as required when the computer was directly connected to the modem, it's much less likely that there is an issue with IE's settings.  However, you may still have a desire to reset IE back to defaults as well.  If so, open IE, click on Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab.  Click on the "Reset" button in the lower part of the Advanced tab's page.  Follow the prompts.  This does the same thing for IE.  Restart the computer, open IE, and try again.
